SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 736,662, dated August 18, 1903. Application filed October 20,1902. Serial No. 128,071. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE WILKINSON, a citizen of Canada, residing atBrantford, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sulky-Plows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in plows; and it consists in the peculiar and advantageous sulky-plowhereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims appended.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a broken perspective view of a sulky-plow constituting the preferred embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the broken line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a detail horizontal section taken in the plane indicated by the broken line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the several views of the drawings, referring to Which-- A is the main frame of my improved plow. This frame is preferably of metal and is provided at its rear end with avertical sleeve a, adjacent to its rear end with a depending portion 1), having a segment-shaped socket c, and at its forward end with a vertical longitudinally-disposed guide (Z and a lateral arm e, Fig. 4:.
B is a transverse rock-shaft journaled in suitable bearings on the frame and having a depending crank f at its outer end terminating in a spindle O, a traveling and supporting wheel mounted on said spindle; D, a hand-lever fulcrumed on the frame and having a detent h arranged to engage a segmental rack i, fixed on the frame, and E a connection between the said hand-lever and the crank f of the rock-shaft B. In virtue of this construction it will be seen that when the hand-lever D is released from the rack 2' and thrown forwardly the crank f will be swung upwardly and rearwardly and the frame A lowered and that when the lever D is thrown rearwardly the crank f will be swung downwardly and the frame A raised.

It will be readily appreciated from the foregoing that-when the lever K is released from the rack on and thrown forwardly the beam G and the point of the plow F will be depressed, while when the lever is thrown rearwardly the beam and the plow-point will be raised; also, that by placing the detent of the lever K in engagement with the rack m the plow may be adjustably fixed in the posi* tion in which it is placed, v
M is a vertical shaft journaled in the sleeve a at the rear of frame A and having a crank p, Fig. 3, at its upper end and a lateral spindle g at its lower end; N, a follower-wheel mounted on said spindle; P, a collar ar ranged on the shaft M and interposed be= tweenthe sleeve a and the spindle g; Q, a collar fixed on the shaft M above the sleeve a and having a socket r; R, a spring-pressed latch mounted in hearings on the frame A, and arranged to enter the socket 0 when the follower-wheel is straight, as shown in Fig, 1, and S a connection, preferably a chain, interposed between the latch R and a segment 5 on the lower end of the lever K. From this it follows that when said lever K is thrown rearwardly to raise the plow F the latch R will be disengaged from the shaft M and the follower-wheel N rendered free to turnlaterally, while when the lever K is swung forwardly to lower the plow to its work the latch will be permitted to move rearwardly under the action of its spring and enter the socket r, and thereby hold the follower-wheel N straight and against lateral turning while the plow is at work.

rod connected to the crank t of shaft U and extending through an aperture 1; in the casting \V and having an enlargement 10 at its rear end, and Y a coiled spring surrounding the rod X'and interposed between the enlargement 10 thereof and the apertured casting W. By virtue of the shafts M and U being connected, as just described, it will be observed that when the follower-wheel N is locked in its straight position the furrowwheel V will be held straight and when the wheel N turns laterally the wheel V will synchronously turn in a corresponding direction.
A, Figs. 1 and 4, is a horizontal bell-crank lever fulcrumed on the frame A; B, a link connecting one arm of said lever and the sleeve T; O, a hand-lever fulcrumed on the frame A, Fig. 1, and having a detent arranged to engage a segmental rack a, fixed on the frame, and D, a rod connecting said handlever and the bell-crank lever A. This latter construction enables the driver of the plow to widen or narrow the furrow at will, for it will be seen that when the lever C is thrown backward the sleeve T and the furrow-wheel V will be moved outward, while when the lever 0 is thrown forward the sleeve T and wheel V will be moved inward.
E is a drivers seat arranged on the frame A within convenient reach of the several hand-levers described, and F is a tongue connected to the crank 25 of the shaft U.
I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear, and exact understanding of the same. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to such specific construction and arrangement of parts, as such changes or modifications may be made in practice as fairly fall within the scope of my invention as claimed.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In a sulky-plow, the combination of a wheel-supported frame, a plow having a forwardly-extending beam; said plow being pivotally connected at its rear end to the frame, and the forward end of its beam being adapted to swing vertically, a lever fulcrumed on the frame, and a connection between the said lever and the beam for raising and lowering the plow when the lever is rocked.
2. In a sulky-plow, the combination of a frame, having a longitudinally-disposed, vertical guide adjacent to its forward end, a plow suitably pivoted at its rear to the frame,
and having a beam extending forwardly through the guide, a bell-crank lever fulcrumed on the frame, a connection between one arm of said lever and the beam, and a lever fulcrumed on the frame and connected with the other arm of the bell-crank lever.
3. In a sulky-plow, the combination of a frame, a plow suitably pivoted at its rear to the frame, and having a forwardly-extending beam, a bell-crank lever fulcrumed on the frame, a connection between one arm of said lever and the beam, a lever K fulcrumed on the frame, a connection between one arm of said lever and the bell-crank lever, avertical shaft journaled in the frame and carrying a follower-wheel, a spring-pressed latch arranged to engage the said shaft, and a connection between said latch and the other arm of the lever K.
- 4. In a sulky-plow,the combination of a frame, a plow suitably pivoted at its rear to the frame, and having a forwardly-extending beam, a bell-crank lever fulcrumed on the frame,'a connection between one arm of said lever and the beam, a lever K fulcrumed on the frame, and having a segment-shaped lower end, a connection between the upper arm of said lever and the bell-crank lever, a vertical shaft journaled in the frame and carrying a follower-wheel, a collar fixed on said shaft, and having a socket, a spring-pressed latch arranged to enter the socket of said collar, and a chain connecting said latch and the segment-shaped lower end of the lever K.
5. In a sulky-plow, the combination of a wheel-supported frame having a depending portion provided with a vertically-disposed segmental socket, a plow arranged in front of said socket, and having a shank at its rear end, provided with a vertically-disposed, circular plate arranged in and pivotally connected to the socket, and also having a forwardly-extending, vertically-movable beam, a lever fulcrumed on the frame, and a connection between the said lever and the beam for raising and lowering the plow when the beam is rocked.
6. The combination in a sulky-plow, of a frame, a plow suitably pivoted at its rear to the frame, and having a forwardly-extending beam, a lever K fulcrumed on the frame, a connection between the said lever and the beam for raising and lowering the latter when the lever is rocked, means for adjustably fixing the lever, a shaft journaled in the frame and having a crank, a follower-wheel carried by said shaft, means controlled by the lever K for locking the shaft against rotation, a second shaft journaled in the frame and having a crank, a furrow-wheel carried by the latter shaft, and a connection between the cranks of the two shafts.
7. The combination in a sulky-plow, of a frame, a plow suitably pivoted at its rear to the frame, and having a forwardly-extending beam, a lever K fulcrumed on the,frame,'a connection between the said lever and the ICC beam for raising and lowering the latter when the lever is rocked, means for adjustably fixing the lever, a shaft journaled in the frame and having a crank, afo1l0wer-wheel carried by said shaft, means controlled by the lever K for lockingthe shaft against rotation, a lateral arm on the forward portion of the frame, a vertical sleeve movable in and out on said arm, a shaft j onrnaled in said sleeve,
