- E. SGHOONMAKER GLOVE AND MIT'IEN. No. 289,792. Patented Decfll, 1883.
\A/ITNEEEIEE I I INVCNTEIR UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
ELON SGHOONMAKER, OF LITTLETON, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR TO THE JUMBO PATENT GLOVE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
GLOVE AND MI'II'TEN.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent lilo 289,792, dated December 4, 1883.
Application filed February 26, 1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-v
Be it known that I, ELoN SOHOONMAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Littleton, in the county of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain Improvements in Gloves and Mittens. of which the following is a specification. I
My present invention consists in a glove or mitten having a thumb formed in one piece with a single seam to avoid the seam across the back of the thumb, and extending to the wrist-line to dispense with a wristband, the side of the thumb-piece nearest the palm forming one side of the opening for the insertion of the hand. I
My invention also consists in a button-flap formed integral with the palm and wrist, and extending under the thumb-piece and across and in contact with the ball of the thumb of the wearer, thus bringing the opening for the introduction of the fingers nearer the thumbpiece, and rendering it easier to put on and remove the glove, 85c. which, when constructed in accordance with my several improvements, is more durable and cheaper to manufacture. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents the front of my glove; Fig. 2, the back; Fig. 3, a pattern of a portion of the body of the glove, showing the mode of cutting the button-flap, and the opening for the insertion of the thfimbpiece; and Fig. 4., a pattern of the thumb-piece.
The body and fingers of the glove are made in the usual manner, the main piece forming thepalm of the hand, the inside of the two middle fingers and the whole of the forefinger and little finger, together with the extension of these two last fingers to the wrist, forming a portion of the back, the remainder of the two middle fingers and back being made of separate strips, as usual.
Instead of the usual elliptical opening for the insertion of the thumb, the thumb-space is formed by a out, 2, extending from the wrist at the back of the thumb to the fork between the thumb and forefinger, thence around the thumb to the inside/of the hand at a point, a, at the inner corner of the button-flap, and thence by lines a b be to the wrist, the last-described line forming the button-flap A, substantially as shown in the drawings, Fig. 3.
The thumb B is made in one piece extend-- ing backward to thewrist, and attached to the body of the glove by a seam, 6, along one edge of the back of the glove, and bythe usual indented seam extending between the thumb and the forefinger, and aroundthe thumb to the inside of the hand at a, the remainder of the inside edge being left unattached, forming one side of the opening 0 and overlapping the button-flap A. g
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1.- A glove or mitten having its thumb (back and front) formed in a single piece separately from the palm or body, and united thereto by a single seam to avoid the seam across the back of the thumb, said thumb-piece extending to the wrist-line, in order thereby todispense with a wristband, and the line of the thumb-piece nearest the palm forming one side of the opening for the insertion of the hand, substantially as described.
2. A glove or mitten having a button-flap, A, cut integral with the palm, and extending partlyacross andunder the ball of the thumbpiece B, having its back and front formed integraland extending to the wrist-line, the innor edgeof the thumb-piece and that of the button-flap forming the sides of the opening 0 for theinsertion of the hand, substantially as specified.
ELON SCHOONMAKER.
