Description

(No Model) G. W. HAGKST'ADT. BOOK-COVER. No. 289,647.
Patented Den; 4, 1883;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. HAOKSTADT, OF OOVINGTON, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR TO 0. F.
BRADLEY & 00., OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
BOOK-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,647, dated'ZDecember 4, 1883,
Application filed June 15, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. HAOKSTADT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Govington, in the county of Kenton and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in book-covers, and particularly to that classv removably secured to the cover, and O the,
leaves of the book. The back B is flexible and yields to the position of the leaves 0.
D D represent clamping or binding strips, hinged to the cover A, as shownin Figs. 1, 2, and 3, and clamping the covers B and A together.
In order to more firmly hold the cover A and B together, I provide stud-pins F on the metallic strip D, which project inwardly and pass through holes or perforations in the cover-leaves B, thereby preventing any lateral movement of the book-cover B relatively to cover A. E represents the eye of one of the '6; but the latter I deem the best.
hinges, detachable, so as to allow the bookcover B to be removed from-cover A. Only one hinge, d, need be employed, and a clasp or other detachable fastening device can be used in lieu of the hinge-eye E and removable pin The fiexibility of the back B allows it to yield when the book is open, and the leaves lie smoothly, as shown in Fig. 2. If the backB were not made flexible, when the book was opened, the leaves would bulge and not lie fiat, as shown. This feature is particularly desirable for books in which writing is to be done, as it affords'a solid smooth surface on which to write.
I claim 1. A removable book cover having the clamp-strip D, hinged at one end to said cover, and provided at its opposite end with a fastening device, and having a series of clamping studs or pins adapted to pass through and secure the inner cover of the book, substantially as described.
2. Aremovable book-cover having the metal strips D, hinged at one end to the said removable cover, and detachably secured at the other end to said cover, in combination with the book-covers B B, secured between the strips D and clamped to the outside cover, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
GEORGE IV. HAOKSTAD'I. Witnesses:
