JOHN B. BABLOW, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
LOOSE-LEAF BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 8, 1910.
Patented Au 15, 1911.
Serial No. 585,971.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. BARLow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Loose-Leaf Binders, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to loose leaf binders, and its object is to provide an improved device of that character which will be simple and economical in construction and easy and effective in operation. This object is attained by, and my invention is preferably embodied in, the structure hereinafter described, illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the operative parts of my binder on a line corresponding to line w-m of Fig. 2: Fig. 2 is an edgewise view of the same from the left of Fig. 1: Fig. 3 is a plan View of the inside of my binder showing the same in its open position, portions of the covers being broken away: Fig. 4 is a plan view of the binding strip: and Fig. 5 is a central axial section of one of the binding posts showing the method of connecting it to the cover.
The front cover 1 and back cover 2 of my binder are connected by a flexible back 3. Binder posts 4, adapted to be inserted into registering perforations in the loose leaves 5 to securely but removably retain them in the binder, are fastened to the back cover. These posts are reduced toward one extremity forming a shoulder 6: this reduced portion is inserted into an orifice in the back cover provided with a strengthening eyelet 7 and is then expanded by riveting to form a head 8, whereby the posts are securely fastened to the back cover.
A binding strip 9 whose extremity is turned to form a finger piece 10 is slidable inside the front cover, as on the studs 11 passing through the slots 12 of this strip and having heads 13 for securely holding it in its sliding engagement. This strip has key hole slots 14 therethrough whose enlarged portions register with and admit the heads 15 of the posts when the strip is slid to the left from its position shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and whose reduced portions engage the grooves 16 when thestrip is in the position shown in said figures. To admit the heads 15 the front cover is perforated as shown in Fig. 1, such perforations being covered with suitable caps 17.
A leaf spring 18 carried by the strip is adapted to press the leaves 5 toward the back cover, and to hold the strip from accidental sliding.
Not confining myself to the details of construction shown and described, I claim:
1. In a loose-leaf binding device, the combination of front and back covers, binding posts carried by the back cover and having grooves and heads, a slidable binding strip inside the front cover having an extension outside the cover for sliding the same on the front cover and having key-hole slots adapted in one position of the binding strip to engage the grooves and hold the heads of the binding posts and in another position to release them, and a spring fastened to the binding strip and pressing toward the back cover in the devices closed position.
2. In a loose-leaf binding device, the combination of front and back covers, binding posts carried by the back cover and having grooves and heads, a slidable binding strip inside the front cover having an extension outside the cover for sliding the same on the front cover and having key-hole slots adapted in one position of the binding strip to engage the grooves and hold the heads of the binding posts and in another position to release them, and a spring fastened to the binding strip and pressing toward the back cover in the devices closed osition the front cover being provided with recesses to receive the heads of the binding posts.
3. In a loose-leaf binding device having front and back covers and binding-posts with heads carried by the back cover, and having a binding strip slidable on the inside of the front cover adapted to engage and disengage the heads of the binding posts, a
spring carried by the binding strip pressing my hand in presence of two subscribing the leaves held in the device toward the back Witnesses.
cover in the devices closed position and pressing the strip in frictional engagement With the heads of the binding-posts to retain Witnesses:
it in its operative position. MARY S. TooKER, In testimony whereof I have hereunto set KATHERINE RICE.
JOHN B. BARLOW.
