BOOK.`
SPECIFICATION forming part of Lettersratent No. 634,265, dated october e, i899. Application filed May 11,1899. Serial No. 716,337. (No model.)
To all ww'm, it may concern.-
Beit known that LEDWARD L. I-IEYDECKEE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Books, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof.
This invention relates to books, and has for its objects to provide for the amendment of in the ordinary movements of the cover the clamping devices of the holding means are covered or concealed; but by reason of this movable connection a small additional movement permits' access to these clamping devices for the purpose of taking the book apart. A
My invention has other objects and advantageous features and includes various improvements, all of which will now be particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure l is a transverse section on a plane indicated by the line 2 2, Fig. 3, but with the book closed, of a separable book embodying my invention. Fig. 2is a similar view, but with the upper cover open Vand moved rearwardly, so as to permit access to the clamping devices. Fig. 3 is a-plan view of the book as shown in Fig. 2.
The holder shown includes a front clamping-bar t and a rear clamping-bar 5and binding-pins 6, and the binding-pins may be secured to one of the clamping-bars and are relativelyto the holder.
shown as secured to the front clamping-bar et. The leaves 7 are preferably separate sheets and are suitably perforated near their back edges and placed over the binding-pins 6, and they are clamped together by clamping devices .or nutsS 8, which are screwed over the clamping-pins 6 and bear upon the rear clamping-bai` 5. The number of binding-pins may be varied for dierent sizes of books, three binding-pins being'most frequently employed. The covers 9 and 10 are hinged to theholder at the front edges of the clamping-bars,'so as to .be ang'ularly movable One of the covers, and as shown the front cover 9, has a simple hinge connection with the corresponding clamping-bar, such connection being shown as formed by the hinges 11, of which one is shown, formed partly by lugs extending forwardly from the clamping-bar i and partly by a lug extending rearwardly from the hingebar 12, the hinge-bar 12 being secured to the front cover by a bent s'tapleor clasp 13 and passing between the two boards forming the cover. The other cover (shown as the rear cover 10) has a hinge connectionV with the corresponding clamping-bar 5 and is also movably connected thereto, so that it may be moved rearwardly to. permit access io the clamping devices, the hinge connection being shown as formed by the hinges 14, of which one is shown, each partly vformed by the hinge-bar 15 and corresponding to the hinges 11; but the hinge-bar 15 has a sliding connection with the cover, shown as formed by the bent staple or clasp 1G, to permit the above-described movement of the cover. -The sliding hinge-bar 15 is of uniform width in the parts which move through the clasp 16, but -increases in width, so as to form a shoulder 17 at the point where it is desirable to arrest its sliding movement; The number of hinges at the front and back ofthe book may be varied for different sizes of books, two
hinges at the front and two hinges at theA IOO narybook, this back lnaybc padded or may have a wooden or leather block inserted therein in any well-known manuel'.
In the ordinary use of the book the sliding hinge-bars l5 will be pushed in to their full extent, as shown in Fig. l, and the covers will open on the hinges ll and It in about the same positions as the covers of an ordinarilybound book, and the book will not materially differ in appearance from an ordinary book.
Only the front edges of the clamping-bars will be visible, and the clamping devices or nuts will be covered and entirely concealed. lVhen, however, it is desired to amend the book, the cover having the movable connection is opened and then pulled rearwardly to the position shown in Fig. 2, and thereby the clamping-bar and clamping-nuts will be completely uncovered, and the clamping -nuts Will now be readily accessible and may be unscrewed and the clampiug-barlifted off from the binding-pins and all or anynumber of the leaves taken out and new leaves inserted, as may be desired. At the conclusion of this operation the rear cover may be pushed forward to the hinges and the book thus restored toits normal condition'.
It will be evident. that the devices embodying my invention are well adapted either for permanent or temporary binders. The binding-pins 6 may not be secured to the front clamping-bars et, so that the binding-pins may be removed, when desired, and other binding-pins of different length substituted therefor. Should it be desired to take the bool; apart from its front, then the threaded ends of the binding-pins and the clamping-nuts thereon would be at the front of the book, the pins being thus reversed from the position shown and the front cover would have the sliding hinge-bar, and should it be desired to take the book apart from both ends then the binding-pins would be provided with clamping-nuts at both ends and the hinge-bars at both the front and the back of the book would have sliding connections with the cover. It is evident that other modications may be made in the construction within the purview of my invention.
Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is g 1. In a book, the combination with means for detachably holding the leaves therein said means including clamping devices, of a cover connected to said holding means and angularly movable relatively thereto andhaving a limited movement relatively thereto in addition to said angular movement independently of said clamping devices, substantially as set forth.

l. In a book the combination with means for detachably holding the leaves, said means including clamping devices, of an angularlymovable cover connected to said holding means independently of said clamping devices so as to be also slidably movable relatively to said holding means, substantially as set.forth.
4. A binder comprising means for detachably holding the leaves, said means including one or more clamping devices, and a back and an angularly-movable cover, connected to said holding means so as to normally cover said clamping device or devices in all positions permitted by the angular movement of said cover, said cover being also movable rearwardly to permit access to the clamping device or devices, substantially as set forth.
5. In a book, the combination with means for detachably holding the leaves, said means including one or more clamping devices, of a back and an angularly-movable cover connected to said holding means so as to normally cover said clamping device or devices in all positions permitted by the angular movement of said cover, said cover being also slidably movable fronrsaid normal positions to permit access to the clamping device or devices, substantially as set forth.
