Description

J. F. POTTER. NBQKTIB PASTBNBR.
No. 288,785. Patented Nov. 2o, 1888.
4 NA PETER'S. Pmuumampmr. wuhinglumuc.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. POTTER, OF BELLEFONTE, PENNSYLVANIA.
NEcKTl-E-FASTENER. l
sPEcIEIcAtrroNrferming part of Lettere Patent No. 288,725, dated November 2o, 1883.
Application filed February 23, 1883. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-`
Be it known that I, JOHN F. POTTER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Bellefonte, in the county of Centre and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Necktie-Fasteners, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in necktie-fastenerswhich is designed to prevent neckties from becomingdetached and lost; and it consists in the vertical loop or button-holder A, the elbows B, B', and C,` projecting feet or supports C', and in the peculiar structure of the device, substantially as hereinafter moreA fully specified. In the drawings, Figure l is a view in perspective. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a modication of my invention.v
In carrying out my invention I take a piece Of wire adapted as to length for its intended purpose and form the tapering or flaring loop A, the smaller end of the loop being uppermost when secured to the tie. In continuation I bend the wire to form the elbows B. These elbows incline at a slight angle downward toward the stock of the tie, and to the right and left, and from thence a second angle, B,`and third angle, C, is formed, the wire being returned in the direction Of the top of theloop and slightly downward toward the stock, and
from thence it is bent at an angle Or curve on f either side to form the feet Or supports C', and projected through the stock-of the tie, where the feet or supports are clinched', thus causing the tie to fit closely to the neck, where buttoned, and to remain in position until removed by the wearer.
I am aware of the patents of F. D. Ford of 4o October 29, 1867, No. 70,331, and J. A. Hard, j of July 1', 1873, No. 140,412, and these I disclaim, my necktie having been undertaken and invented with full knowledge thereof, and with the sole Object of rendering such neckties popular by overcoming the Objections thereto which have hitherto prevented their becoming generally adopted. Before the use of wireloops the loop or elastic with which such' neckties were secured frequently became detached, resulting in the loss of the tie, and in the patented ties aforesaid the shape of the wire loop and the obvious difficulty of inserting the unseen button by pressing it through the loop prevented such ties from coming into general favor. These paramount objections my tie fully meets and overcomes, as the wider part of the loop is caused to project out from the tie-shield, and is there amply wide'enough to admit the button-head, from which point it gradually converges until sufficiently narrow to clasp the shank ofthe button formed by the button-threads with which the button is sewed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The necktie-fastener described, consisting of a piece of wire bent to form the upwardlyprojecting loop A, open at the bottom, the elbows, and feet or supports, all substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN F. POTTER.
