J. B. OORNISH;

UNITED STATES PATENT 1 Erica.
JOHN B. CORNISH, OF BARNSTABLE, MASSAGHUSETTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,301, dated November 9,1886.
Application filed June :21, 1886. Serial No. 205,750. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN B. CORNISH, of
Barnstable, in the county of Barnstable and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Combined Collar-Button and Necktie-Fastener, of which the following is a specification. In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure l is a view of my'improved device in position for use. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the same removed. Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section of the same in position foruse. Figs. 4 and 5 represent modifications.
A represents an ordinary shirtcollar; a, the rear button-hole in the same; B, the band of a necktie or scarf, and G 0, Fig. 3, the two ends of the neckband of the shirt. D is the rear collar-button.
It is quite common for gentlemen to tuck the band of the necktie or scarf under the rear collar-button, in order to prevent it from working up at that point. The'objects of my device are to prevent the band thus tucked under, first, from riding up over the collar-but ton, and, second, from slipping horizontally around, so as to move the scarf or tie in front away from a central position. To accomplish this object I attach an arm, D, rigidly to the head of the button D in such a manner that it will extend down against the band, as shown. Then, by roughly punching one or more holes therein from the outer side, I produce roughnesses or projections D on the side next the necktie-band, which slightly stick into said band and hold it so that it will not move. This arm D may extend down directlyfrom the head of the button D, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3; or it may extend from the post of the button, as shown in Fig. 4, or from the upper side of the button, bending down around the head thereof, as represented in Fig. 5. It may be soldered or otherwise secured to the button,and the projections D may be produced in any desired manner, the method above described being recommended on account of its cheapness. The arm is placed and shaped so as to press firmly against the band B, in order that ample friction may be produced.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
. A combined collar-button and necktie-holder,
JOHN .B.- connisn.
