SAFETY BUTTON HOLE LOOP. No. 341,879. Patented May 18, 1886,

. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
FRANK G. CHURCHILL, ()F LEBANON, NEV HAMPSHIRE.
SAFETY BUTTON-HOLE LOOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,879, dated May 18, 18816.
Application filed March 24, 1886. Serial No. 196,359.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK C. CHURCHILL, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Lebanon, in the county of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Button- Hole Loops, of which the following is a specification. v
The object of. my invention is to provide,in connection with asuspenderbuckle, improved means for engaging with and fastening about the shank of a garment-button.
My invention consists in arranging with the buckle a combined wire button -loop and a yielding spring-closer, the latter being somewhat the shortest and depending in front of the loop; also, in the peculiar form and arrangement of the said loop and fastener, which in this case are bent from a single piece of wire.
In the drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are front and rear elevations showing the button-loop and the operation of the springcloser. Fig. 3 is an end elevation.
Like letters refer to like parts.
A is a buckle of ordinary construction. The
lower bar, a, of it consists of the raised straight portion and the depressed bends b.
To form the button-1oop a wire is bent to form the Ushaped portion B, and then bent outward and upward to make the enlargement O. The wire is thereafter carried around the bends b in the form of eyes 0 c, and then down in front of the portions 0 and B, to form a spring-closer, D. The lower part of this has V-shaped bends d near the termination of the free ends of the wire. Thus a yielding spring or closer is provided, permitting the buttonshank to pass into the portion orloop proper, B, and thereafter holding the button from (No model.)
slipping up or out. It will be seen that the loop, as a whole, has free play to meet the motion or bending of the body from the manner in which it is hinged to the buckle-bar; also, that the button may be easily inserted by spreading the spring-closer with the fingers, or by placing 'the button in the enlargement C and drawing the bends of said closer up over, the button-shank.
I am aware that a necktie-fastener has been used which, inverted, resembles my device, and I disclaim it. In the construction there shown the play of the spring-closer is limited by the sides of the loop, and both are united by solder, which would not permit sufficient spring action for use in connection with a suspenderbuckle; nor are the parts formed from a sin gle-piece of wire, hence cause more trouble and expense to manufacture than mine.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the suspenderbuckle, of the button-loop, substantially as shown, and the yielding spring-closer arranged wholly outside of said loop, so as to have the limit of its opening or closing unaffected there by, the said loop and closer being bent from a single piece of wire, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the buckle-bar a, of the button-loop B 0, having eyes 0 c, and the spring-closer D, depending in front of said loop, and having bends d d, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signatu re in presence of two witnesses.
