IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER DOLLS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,866, dated June 1, 1875; application filed April 14, 187 5.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. HART, J r., of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper Dolls; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a front view of the device embodyin g my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse section in line or m, Fig. 2. Fig. 4. is a rear "low of a detached part. Fig. 5 is a top view, and Fig. 6 is a front View, .of the dolls dress.

Myinvention relates to a doll which is made in sections, and may be decked with difi'erent dresses; and .it' consists in a tongue secured to the head and body portion and continued into legs, which are inserted into the top of the dress, or at the rear thereof, in order to properly locate the parts and add stability thereto. It also consists in a prong or loop formed with or attached to the tongue for connecting the body of the doll and its dress, and acting as an axis on which the body may vibrate for imitating motions of walking, or the dress may be moved sidewise, so as to be set at various angles or imitate swinging.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the head and body or upper portion of a doll, and B represents the dress thereof, which is open at top. To the portion A I secure a tongue,

is extended in length to form legs D. The legs will be introduced into the top opening of the dress, or through one or more slits, I), out therein, as shown by dotted lines, or behind the dress, with the apron or overskirt flap c in front of the dress.

It will be seen that the doll and its dress may be said to be constructed of two pieces. The tapering or conical sides a of the tongue will wedge with the top opening of the dress or slit b, and thus firmly secure the portion A and the dress, or prevent their disengagement, and also stiffen or give stability to the entire doll. E represents a flexible or elastic prong or loop, which is formed in or attached to the tongue 0, and, projecting therefrom, serves to limit the downward motion of the portion A when applied to the dress, and overhanging the top of the dress, it acts as an axis therefor, whereby the entire body of the doll may be oscillated to impart to it the appearance of walking, or the dress oscillated or moved sidewise, so as to be set at various angles or imitate swinging.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, with the upper portion A of a doll, of the tongue 0, continued into legs D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The prong or loop E, fixed to or a portion of the tongue 0, and operating with the dolls dress, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
