WITNESSES:
A TTOHNE WEE FFlCEe MADGE MCDONALD, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
PAPER DOLL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 515,090, dated February 20, 1894.
Application filed November 13, 1893- Serial No. 490,840. [No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MADGE MCDONALD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Washington, District of Columbia, have invented a new and Improved Paper Doll, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in paper dolls.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved paper doll and paper articles of clothing for the same, which are so constructed that the articles of paper clothing can be readily applied to the paper doll body and in such a manner as to produce in a very great extent the exact appearance of a dressed doll.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a face view of myimproved paper doll and the paper articles of clothing on the same. Fig. 2 is a face View of the paper doll. Fig. 3 is a front view of the paper hat. Fig. 4: is a vertical transverse section through the same. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view through the paper doll body. Fig. 6 is a rear view of one of the paper garments.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The doll body is made of stiff paperor paste board and is ornamented in the conventional manner, It is provided with a long neck extension B to the upper end of which the rear side of the paper head 0 is pasted in such a manner that the head is in normal position on the body but can be bent back with the neck, as shown in Fig. 5 and rests over the front of the neck extension. The bottom or chin part of the head is not connected with the body or neck and the head is provided with heavy curls or looks of hair at each side as shown at a which project down more or less below the chin. The hat D is also made of heavy paper or paste board and is provided with a curved slit cl into which the upper part of the head 0 can be passed, when the hat is to be placed upon the doll. The paper garments E such as dresses, wrappers, cloaks, &c., are provided at the center of the top with a neck-extension F, which is always in flesh color, the same as the neck on the body. These garments are also provided at the top,
and at each side of, the neck extension with a holding wing G, which wings are bent down on the back of the garments and serve for suspending the garment from the shoulders of the paper doll body in the usual well known manner. Before applying the garments to the body, the head and the neck of the body are bent back to permit of passing the neck portion of the garment under the head and the top parts of the paper garment under the depending curls a so that the chin andcurls of the head lap over the upper part of the garment and the neck formed therein. Thereby a very pleasing effect is produced and the usual break or joint directly below the head is completely concealed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A paper doll having a long neck extension on the paper body and a head attached to the front of said neck extension, the lower part of the head being free from the neck so as to permit of inserting a piece of paper between the chin part of thehead and the front of said neck, substantially as set forth.
. 2. A paper doll, having a long neck extension on the paper body and a paper head attached to the front of said neck, which head has dependent curl-sections on each side of the chin, said chin and curl-sections being free from the neck, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with a paper doll body having a neck extension, of a paper head socured to the front of said extension to extend over the front of the same, the lower part of the head being free from the neck extension, and papergarments having neck extensions at the top, which neck extensions can be inserted between the front of the neck extension of the body and the back of the bottom part of the head attached to said neck exten-
