Be it known that I, JEROME O. BB I GGS, of Oolumbus,in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in game-toys and its object is to provide a simple and inexpensive construction of toy designed to amuse and interest the user.

With this object in view my invention consists, essentially, in an inclosing box or case provided with a sliding cover and a figure, such as that of an animal or serpent, pivoted therein and means connecting the figure and sliding cover, whereby when the cover is opened the figure will be caused to move out of the box and upon the cover being closed to.

My invention further consists in making this figure segment-shaped, in imitation of the head and a portion of the body of a serpent, and providing the mouth thereof with a pin orprojection representing fangs, which when the cover is opened and the figure projects from the case is adapted to stick the finger of the operator. t In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View showing the box open and the figure projected. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, the box being closed.

My invention contemplates the provision of a simple and inexpensive construction of toy adapted to amuse and interest the young.

In carrying out my invention I provide a comparatively long and narrow inclosing box or case 1, having a sliding cover 2, provided with a finger-nail recess 3 to enable the said cover to be readily and conveniently opened. Within this case is contained a figure 4, representative of an animal or serpent. Preferably this figure will be of segment shape and designed to represent the head and a portion of the body of a serpent. The head 5 of the serpent is free or unconfined and the mouth thereof is provided with a pin or projection 6, representing the fangs. The inner end or base of the figure is formed with a circular enlargement 7, pivoted to the side walls of the case by means of a pivot-pin 8. A ggdtape, olwhlfiflggnmectionfiextends be Ween the bottom surface of the sliding cover n wscast and the serpent figure adjacent to said circular base enlargement thereof and is provided to enable the said figure to be forced or projected out through the open top of the box when the cover is opened, as will be readily understood. As before stated, the figure is preferably constructed of segment shape and representative of a portion of the body of a serpent, as by this construction a box or case of comparatively small size may be employed; but it is obvious that the figure may be made in the form of 'an animal, such as a rodent, if desired.

In use the possessor of the toy may derive considerable amusement by handing the toy to a companion and requesting him to open the sliding cover. The person opening the cover will be startled at the appearance of what he supposes to be the head of a snake or a rodent issuing from the case as he opens the cover. This impression will be considerably enhanced when the figure is made representative of a serpent and the pin or penetratin g projection before mentioned provided, as this pin will when forced out stick the finger of the person operating the cover, so that the person will imagine that he has been bitten by the serpent. The figure will drop by its own gravity back into the box after it has been forced past the center by forcing the cover slightly inwardly.

I do not limit my invention to the employment of any particular material in its .construction, and it is obvious that it may be made of any material suitable for the purpose.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a toy, the combination of a box, a segmental-shaped figure constructed to be contained within the box and pivoted so as to swing out of the same, a sliding cover for the box, means connecting the cover and figure to cause the latter to swing out of the box when the cover is opened, and a pin 6 at the free end of the figure adapted to enter the finger or hand of the user, substantially as described.

2. In toys of the class described, the com bination of an inclosing box or case, a sliding cover for the same, said cover being provided with a finger-nail recess, a segment-shaped representation of an animal or serpent inclosed within said case and formed at its lower or inner end with an enlargement and at its outer end with a pin or penetrating projection, a pivot-pin passed through the side walls of the case and the enlargement of the figure and pivoting the latter therein, and a connection between the cover and figure whereby upon the cover being opened the said figure Will be caused to project or move out of the case and the said pin or penetrating projection to enter the finger of the person moving the cover, substantially as described.
