Be it known that I, WILLIAM ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention has relation to toys, and more particularly to that class which are of a deceptive nature, requiring the knowledge of the construction or the manner of manipulating the same to successfully operate the toy.

The object of this invention is to provide a toy of the above-described character wherein a winged wheel is rotatably mounted upon a suitable receptacle and a supply of air is carried through said receptacle to revolve said wheel, and in constructing my improved toy I have provided means of deception in connection with the same, whereby should the manipulator of the toy who is not familiar with the same try to operate the toy the manipulator will be disfigured with a suitable removable powder which he will propel through said toy upon himself.

A further object of this invention is to provide a toy of the above-described character which will be extremely simple in construction, strong and durable, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and I have not only constructed a toy which will be an amusement to the juvenile class, but will be of interest to adults when testing their skill to operate the toy.

The invention finally resides in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and, referring to the drawin s accompanying this application, like numera s of reference designate corresponding parts throughout both views, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my improved toy, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof.

As heretofore stated, my improved toy is of a deceptive nature, and I have constructed the same whereby it may be employed for amusing children or may be constructed upon such lines as to be of interest to adults. The toy is adapted to be operated by blowing in the same or forcing a supply of air through the receptacle comprising one of the elements of my invention. I have constructed the toy whereby the same may be readily carried within the pocket of a manipulator and removed therefrom when it is desired to test the skill of those not familiar with the same. In carrying my invention into effect I have provided a receptacle 1, which is preferably constructed of light metal and is preferably annular in form, the receptacle being substantially a small can, and in the top of the receptacle I secure a lid or cover 2, this lid or cover being provided with a depending llange 3, which is adapted to engage within the top of the receptacle 1. The flange upon its one side is cut away, as indicated at 4, forming a slot.

The receptacle 1 is provided near its bottom and in its side with an opening 5, in which is secured a tube 6, this tube extending a suflicient distance without the receptacle, whereby the same may be placed in the mouth of a person, and the receptacle will be a sutficient distance away from the face of the person manipulating the same, whereby if the toy has been successfully operated the manipulator of the toy may observe the same. The tube 6 extends a short distance within the receptacle and has its end partly closed, forming an opening 7. The tube 6 near its inner end is provided with an opening 8, and in said opening 8 is mounted an other tube 18 of a smaller diameter than the tube 6. In the tube 6 is placed a tube 9, which extends through the opening 7 into the receptacle 1,. The tube 9 protrudes a short distance beyond the tube 6, as designated at 11, the object of which will be hereinafter more fully described. The tube 18 extends through an opening 12, formed in the lid 2 of the receptacle, the upper end of the tube 18 extending a slight distance above the lid or cover 2.

Mounted upon the lid or cover 2 is an inverted-U-shaped bracket 14, the ends of said bracket being secured to the lid or cover, as designated at 15 15. Prior to mounting this bracket upon the lid or cover a winged wheel 16, similar to a propeller-wheel, is mounted upon said bracket. The bracket let is preferably constructed of a light wire which after the wheel has been placed thereon is bent to the form shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings and secured upon the lid or cover. The bracket 14 and the wheel are so positioned upon the lid or cover that some of the wings or blades 17 of the wheel will lie directly over the tube 18.

I/Vhen the toy is to be used in a deceptive manner, a suitable powder 19,- such as lampblack, flour, or the like, is placed in the receptacle 1 by removing the lid or cover 2. When the powder has been placed within the receptacle, the lid is placed upon the receptacle in such a manner as to permit a small crack or space to exist between the lid. or cover and the top edge of the receptacle, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. In placing the lid or cover on the receptacle and providing a small space between the lid or cover 2 and the top edge of the receptacle the slot or opening 4 of the flange 3 will be exposed, whereby should the powder 19 be forced to the upper part of the receptacle it will passthrough the slot or opening 4 and be projected upon the person operating the toy. To propel the wheel 16, the operator places the tubes 6 and 9 within his mouth and forces the supply of air through said tubes. In order to propel the wheel 16, it is necessary that the operator place his tongue over the opening of the tube 9, whereby the air passing into the tube 6 will pass through the space 10, maintained. between the pipes 6 and 9, and revolve the wheel- 16.

Should the operator of the toy neglect to place his tongue over the opening of the tube 9, air will enter the receptacle through the tube 9 and propel the powder contained therein with considerable force'to the upper part of the receptacle and through the slot or opening 4 and be projected into the face of the manipulator of the toy. Should this toy be used as an amusement novelty for children, the powder 19 may be dispensed with and the lid or cover- 2 placed tightly down upon the receptacle, at which time all air propelled through the tube 6 will revolve the wheel 16, and the air passing through pipe 9 will enter the receptacle.

While I have herein shown a winged or -bladed wheel as being rotatably mounted upon the top of the receptacle and adapted to be propelled by a supply of air, it is obvious that any other desired revoluble object which could beactuated by a force of air could be placed upon the receptacle, and I do not care to limit myself to the particular shape, size, and construction of the toy, but may vary the same as will be permissible by the appended claims.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination with a receptacle adapted to contain a powder and having a lid or cover provided with an annular flange frictionally fitting the inner wall of the receptacle at the upper end thereof, and provided with a slot, and a Whirligig supported on said lid or cover, of a tube mounted in the wall of the receptacle near the lower end thereof, a tube of smaller diameter mounted within the first-mentioned tube and extending beyond both ends thereof, and a vertical tube within the receptacle, extending through the top thereof with its lower end connected to the first-mentioned tube and communicating therewith, substantially as described.

2. The combination with a receptacle adapted to contain a powder and having a movable lid or cover, said cover controlling by its position the egress of the powder from the receptacle through a slot formed in the.

lid or cover, a Whirligig mounted on said lid or cover, a tube passing through the wall of the receptacle, a vertical tube connected to said first-named tube and passing through said cover and a third tube passing from within the receptacle to without the same, the inner end of said third tube opening into the receptacle and the outer end of the same being disposed adjacent the outer end of the first-named tube.
