IMPROVEMENT IN DLLS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,394, dated December 1, 1874 application led i October 31, 1874.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. HART, Jr., of the city and county of Philadelphia, and the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dolls and Wardrobe therefor 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this speciiication, in which- Figure l is a general view of the device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof' in line x x, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view of Fig. l, certain parts being removed. Figs. 4` and 5 are views of detached parts. Fig. 6 is a bottom view.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

My invention consists in constructing the body of a doll of separated parts or sections, whereby they may be tted to various dresses. It also consists in providing the parts of the doll and the dress with tongues and pockets, whereby said parts and dress may be nicely and securely fitted to each other. It -further consists in so constructing the doll that it may be made to oscillate and assume the appearance of walkin g.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a doll, whose body is constructed of the head portion B, legs C, and trunk D, which are separated from each other. E E represent tongues, which are formed on the head B and legs C at ends thereof, adjacent to the trunk l), and in said trunk l) there are formed vertically-extending pockets F, into which tongues E E of the head and legs are adapted to enter and be held. G represents the dolis dress, which is open at top and bottom, and within the same is secured the trunk D.

It will be seen that the head and legs of the doll may be readily applied to the trunk D, and thus complete or build up the doll, as seen in Fig. 2. Should a different dress be required, the head and legs are removed and applied to the trunk having the proper dress thereon. It' different-colored shoes are required, the

legs having the desired colored shoes will be applied in lieu of those occupying the trunk.

In fact, various changes may be made to suit the taste or whim of the child owning the doll.

It is evident that the arms J of the garment corresponding to a sack, basque, or overskirt, may be provided with tongues, and thus adapted to be applied to and removed from the trunk D, whereby variety in dressing the doll will be increased.

The trunk D will be secured to and suspended from the upper end of the dress by means of a link, staple, wire, or other fastening, K, and thus vibrate freely on said fastening K. A finger-piece or lever, L, is secured to the trunk l), and projects laterally' therefrom through an opening, M, in the rear or rear piece N ofthe dress Gr.

It will be seen that by holding the dress by one hand, and reciprocating the nger-piece L, the trunk will be vibrated, and thus impart a vibrating or oscillating motion to the head and legs of the doll, whereby the movements of walking will be readily imitated.

If desired, the weak parts ofthe trunk and portion of the dress at the fastening' K may be strengthened with strips of muslin or other suitable re-ent'orcing material. I

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The doll A, having its body B C D composed of separate sections, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The doll-sections B C, formed with tongues E E', in combination with the trunk D, provided With pockets F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. The combination, with the doll-dress G, of the oscillating trunk D, suspended therein by means ot' the fastening K, which constitutes the axis of the trunk, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. The oscillating trunk D and operating iinger-piece or lever L, combined and arranged to operate substantially as andfor the purpose set forth. v
