INVENTOI? A TTOHNEYJ' UNITED STATES 'ATENT OFFICE.
TIIOMAS IV. PATRICK, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
TOY OR PUZZLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,047, dated October 27, 1896.
Application filed May 25,1896. Serial No. 593,019. (No model.)
in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to toys, puzzles, and similar articles, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is adapted to amuse and entertain the young, a further object being to provide an improved puzzle the solution of which is difficult, but may be accomplished by the exercise of care, skill, and ingenuity in the manipulation thereof.
The invention is fully disclosed in the fol lowing specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, said drawing being a side view of my improved toy or puzzle with a part of the construction shown in section..
In the practice of my invention I provide a handle 5, which is connected with or formed on a short shaft or rod 6, the outer end of which is preferably spherical in form, as shown at 7, and mounted thereon is a cupshaped receptacle 8, which is open at its upper side and provided on its lower side with a neck 9, by which it is secured to the shaft or rod 6.
Secured to the bottom of the cup 8 are two elastic cords l0 and 11, one of which is much longer than the other, and said cords are pro- Vided with balls 12 and 13, respectively, which are preferably composed of wood, and which are secured to the ends thereof in any desired manner.
The solution of the puzzle or the object in the manipulation of the device is to succeed in depositing both of the balls in the receptacle 8 at the same time by simply manipulating the device by means of the handle 5, and in this operation the receptacle 8 is held in the position shown in the drawing, and by giving the receptacle a quick upward movement and a slight downward movement this result may be accomplished.
My invention is not limited to the exact form of the receptacle nor to the material from which the same and the handle 5 are constructed, and it is evident that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A toy, puzzle or similar device, comprising a handle, a cup-shaped receptacle secured to the outer end thereof, and two elastic cords connected with said receptacle, each of which is provided with a ball or spherical body, said cords being secured in the bottom of said receptacle, and one being longer than the other, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a toy, puzzle, or similar device, the combination with a handle, provided with a shank or rod as 6, of a cup-shaped receptacle as 8, said cup-shaped receptacle being open at the top, and being secured to the outer end of said rod or shaft, and two, elastic bands secured in the bottom of said receptacle, each of which is provided with a ball or spherical body, substantially as shown and described. 7 3. In a toy, puzzle or similar device, the combination of a handle of a shaft connected therewith, the outer end of which is spherical in form, a cup mounted on the spherical portion of said shaft and which is open at its upper side, and provided on its lower side with a neck 9, by means of which it is secured to the neck of the shaft by two elastic cords 10 and 11 secured to the bottom of the cups, one of which cords is longer than the other, and balls 12 and 13 connected with said cords, whereby the puzzle is to be so manipulated as to deposit said balls in said receptacle, as set forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 21st day of May, 1896.
