SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 674,303, dated May 14, 1901.

Application filed July 18, 1900.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MORGAN T. MORGAN. a citizen of the United States, residing at Ana conda, in the county of Deerlodge and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to toys, and has for its object to provide a simple construction of toy which may be manufactured at small cost and which is designed to afford interest and am usement and at the same time requires the exercise of some degree of skill in its manipulation.

To this end the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts,which will be hereinafter fully set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevational view of a toy embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view taken at right angles to Fig. l and showing the ball or swinging object in section.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, in which like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout both views, the numeral 1 designates a shank or handle, and 2 a cup or receptacle formed of a single piece of coiled wire. The cup is mounted upon the upper end of the handle and is connected thereto by a neck or reduced portion 3, which .allows said cup to vibrate laterally when the handle is manipulated to seat the ball Within the cup. At the lower end of the handle the wire is extended and doubled upon itself to form a springtongue 4, which is designed to hold the swinging object when the toy is not in use. The swinging object comprises a ball 5 of a size to fit within the cup 2. This ball is connected to the neck portion 3 by a cord or flexible connection 6 and is provided with a bore or passage 7, extending part way through it, and communicating with a socket 8. The end of the cord carrying the ball is knotted, and the knot abuts against the shoulder at the junction of the passage and socket to prevent ac- $erial No. 24,044. (No model.)

cidental withdrawal of the cord. Any other suitable form of stop may, however, be provided. The spring-tongue 4 is designed to enter the socket 8 to hold the ball secure when the toy is not in use.

The mode of using the toy is to allow the ball to swing free and to endeavor to swing and seat the ball Within the cup by manipulating the handle. This requires the'exercise of some degree of skill, and the efforts of the user to seat the ball afford a source of interest and amusement. The yielding or spring and lateral vibratory action of the cup in moving the handle renders the operation of seating the ball somewhat harder than would otherwise be the case and calls for a greater degree of skill in the use of the toy.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of theUnited States, 1s-

1. A toy comprising a single piece of resilient wire bent to form a coiled handle and a laterally-yielding cup, the cup located at one end of the handle, and a spring-tongue at the other end of the handle, a ball having a socket to receive said tongue, and a flexible connection between the ball and handle, substantially as set forth.

2. A toy consisting of .a single piece of resilient wire bent to form a coiled handle, a cup located at one end of the handle and connected thereto by a reduced neck portion, said cup adapted to yield in a plane longitudinally of the handle and to vibrate in a plane laterally of the handle, and a springtongue at the other end of the handle, combined with a ball having a socket to receive the tongue, and a flexible connection between said ball and handle, substantially as described.
