Description

PATENTED JUNE 9, 1903.
'Patented June 9, 1903.
UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FERDINAND STRAUSS, OF YONKERS, NEW YORK.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 730,584, dated June 9, 1903.
Application filed April 15, 1903. Serial No. 152,647. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FERDINAND STRAUSS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yonkers, Westchester county, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to a toy in which a ball propelled into the air by a spring-plum ger is recaught by a scalloped resilient cup surrounding the plunger. In this way various healthful gaines calling for skill and dexterity may be played.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of my improved toy; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section through the lower part thereof, showing the plunger raised; and Figi 3, a similar View with the plunger depressed.
The lettera represents a handle from which projects upward atube b, having a longitudinal slot b". Within the tube is free to play a plunger c, actuated by a spring d and having a thumb-piece o', that extends outwardly through slot h'. At its top the tube?) carries a cup which is bellshaped, widening gradually from the bottom upward. The cup is composed of a series of bent wires e, having two converging shanks which are secured to the tube at their lower ends. At the center or top each wire is curved, as at e, so that the wires form collectivelya resilient cup having a scalloped mouth. By the construction described the entire cup is made resilient to decrease the shock and is well adapted to entrap the ball. When the plunger is raised, it projects some distance into the base'of the cupand forms the support for the ball f. When the plunger is lowered, it is withdrawn entirely or partly from the cup.
In use the ball is placed into the cup upon the plunger, Fig. l, and by manipulating the latter the ball is projectedinto the air to be either recaught by the same cup or by the cup of another player. In this way a large number of interesting and healthful indoor or outdoor games may be played.
What I claim is- In a toy, the combination of a handle with a tube, an inclosed spring-plunger, and a se- FERDINAND STRAUSS.
