UNITED `STATES ATENT FFICE ALPHEUS ARTER, 'OF NEV LISBON, OHIO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,590, dated September 11, 1883.
\ Application filed J' une 28, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALPHEUs ARTER, ofl New Lisbon, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hame-Tugs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in hame-tugs, including improvements on clips that form a part ofthe hame-tug; and it consists in certain features of construction and in combination of parts, hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
Hame-tugs have usually been attached to the harness by means of clips secured to the haine-tug, Vand usually with one or both ends of the clip occupying a groovefor recess in the leather. At the other end of the hame-tug was attached a tug-buckle, and between the buckle and the clip the draft was sustained by the leather ofthe hame-tug. These clips have been made of different lengths, according to the notion of the manufacturer; vbut in any case, with the clips long or short, at the end thereof would be a weak place in the hametug, where it would bend and eventually crack and break off. If the clips were made eX-. tremely long, it only advanced the weak point farther along the hame-tug without remedying the difficulty. I have therefore invented the device illustrated in the drawings, where- Figures 1 and 2 are views in perspective of the two pieces .of metal, respectively, that form at once the clip and buckle support. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional edge view of the hame-tug with the said clip in its proper position.
A represents the `hame-tug5 c, the loop or thimble for securing the end of the tug or trace.
B is the part of the clip-that engages the buckle, and C the part of the clip that en gages the hame. The part B has a flat end doubled back and adapted to engage thebuckle l). It is also provided at b with holes for a rivet or screw, and at b a hole adapted to engage the hook or projection c. rIhe part C should be rounded and bent in aproper manner to engage the staple or dead-eye of the hame, while the other end has a hole, c', `adapted to engage the vscrew-bolt or rivet that is placed in the holes at b. In Fig. 3 is shown the parts assembled, with the projection c engaging the hole b', and the opposite ends secured by the bolt or rivet G. Between the parts of the clip is seen a leather filling, and on the outside a leather casing, which, with the aforesaid thim'-l ble a, completes the haine-tug.
It will be seen, rst, that there is no weak point where the haine-tug can bend without bending the clip; and, second, the clips connect the buckle direct with the hams and relieve the leather from all strain from the draft on thetug or trace; also, after the leather is stitched in its proper place, the part B may thrust from one end into its place between the layers of leather, while the part O may in like manner be placed from the other end. rIhe parts b and c will be forced into an engagement with each other by the pressure of the leather casing, and they will only require the addition of the screw or rivet Gto secure all of the parts. l
1. A hame-tug provided with the parts B O, secured together near their opposite ends, one part being provided with a loop for the buckle D, and the other part provided with loop C', substantially as set forth.
2. In a hame-tug, thecombination, with the part B, provided with a loop at one end and perforations b and slot b, of the part O, provided with a loop at one end and a-perforation, e', and hook c, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification, in the presence of two witnesses, this 22d day of June, 1883.
ALPHEU's ARTER.
Witnesses? JACOB M. Toor, `T. S. ALBRIGHT.
