BLAeKlNG-Box HOLDER.
` SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 283,256, dated August 14, 1883.
Appliatioa tuta Aprii14,`1sa3. (Model.) d
To u/ZZ who/n, it'. may concern/.1`
-Be it knownthatl, FREDERICK N. LAcEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Council Bluffs, in the county of Pottawattamie and 5 State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blacking-Box `Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being hadtherein to the accompanying drawings. i
rlhis invention relates to certain improve-` ments in blacking-box holders 5 and it has for fits object to provide a device by means of which the `box may be conveniently held with one hand while applying blacking to the brush, without soiling the fingers. These objects I attain by the means illustrated in .thc accom- `fauying drawings, in which` Figure l represents a perspective view of my improved device; Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional view of a portion thereof. and Fig. 3 a transversevertical sectional view taken atV the line of junction of the two plates whichsupport the box.
The letter AsindicatesA a metallic shankf Y which is provided with beveled frsides and a longitudinal groove, B, for the purpose hereinafter specified. One end of said shank is secured in a suitable handle, C, and the other end has secured to it asemi-elliptical plate, D, which is provided with lugs E at its curved edge. This plate isrigidly secured to the shank. V
" The letter G indicates a movable plate, which is of the same shape as the stationary plate, before mentioned. The said plate is provided on its lower side with inclined lugs H, which embrace the sides of the shank and 'slide thereon, permitting the plate to move on the shank for the purpose of adjusting the box 4o to its seat. The said plate is provided with lugs I at its curved edge, and with anyeXtension, K, which may be engaged by the thumb or finger in order to draw the movable plate away from` the stationary plate in order to secure the box. i
The letter L indicates a spiral spring, which is located in the groove in the shank below the plates. One end of said spring is secured to a stud or pin, M, fastened in the forward end of the shank, and the other is 5o` secured to 'a hook Vor loop, N, on the under side of the movable plate, `as shown in Fig. 2. This ""s'pr'ing operates to draw th-e movable plate normally toward the stationary plate.
The operation of my device will be apparent from the above description. Toinsert the jboX the movable plate is drawn back, andthe boX placed upon the plates with its edges between the lugs. rIlhe movable plate is thenreleased, and the spring causes it to clamp the 6o box between the lugs on the respective plates. Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The combination, in a blacking-box holder, Vof a beveled shank slotted longitudinally and secured to a suitable handle, a semicircular. plate secured to the end of the shank and provided with upright lugs, a sliding semicircular plate provided with similar lugs, and Ainclined lugs'below embracing the beveled sides of the shank, a spring fastened in the slot in the shank and to the movable plate, and a thumb-piece attached to the movable plate, the whole arr( nged to operate substantially in the manner speciiied.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in. presenceof two witnesses. i FREDERICK N. LACEY. Vitnesses: y
J. W. CRossLANn, H. C. ATKINs.
