Be it knowny that l, .Bromuro G.' SCOTT, a subject of the King of vGrreat Britain, residing at Edmonton, inl the VProvince of Alberta and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improve-` ments in lVrenches, ofwhi'ch the followingl is a specification.`

A further object of theinvention lis to provide a wrenchof the 'above-mentioned character, wherebythe `same may be easily and'quickly adjustedtothe' desired size of objects upon which the same is to be used, means being further provided for holding the slidable jaw of the wrench in its proper adjusted position against accidental displacement while the same is in use.

In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred einbcdiinent of my invention, the numeral 1 designates an elongated shank the lower end of which is reduced as shown at 2 in the drawing to receive a suitable handle 3. Formed on the upper end of the shank 1 is the stationary j aw 4 which includes the extensions 5 and 6, respectively. The bottom surface of the extension 5 is serrated as shown at 7 while the bottom surface of the extension 6 is substantially smooth as shown at 8 in the drawing. The purpose of this construction will be hereinafter more fully described. Arranged on the front and rear faces of the shank 1 and extending longitudinally thereon are the nurled or milled surfaces suc-l1 as are shown at 1S in the drawing The purpose of lthis construction will be presently apparent. Formed in the front and rear faces of the slidable jaw 11 and eX- tending inwardly from opposite sides thereof are the cutout portions or grooves 19 and 20, respectively. The cutoutportions extend transversely through the opening 16 and have their inner ends communicating therewith in the manner as clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing.
Adapted te be detachably support each `of the cutcut portions is the sl finger 21 the outer end of eac-h finger hav ing an opening Q2 formed therein whereby the fastening screw Q3 will extend therethrough and support the same in each groove formed in the slidable jaw. The inner end of each of the spring fingers is enlarged as shown at 24 and the inner surface of the enlarged portion 24 of each finger is also nurled or milled to co-operate with the nurled or milled surfaces 18 on the front and rear sides of the shank 1 in the manner as clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing.
The nurled surfaces Q5 of the spring fingers 21 will normally be in engagement with the nurled surfaces 18 of the'shank 1 and provides a means for holding the slidable Vjaw lever in its adjusted position on the shank l. The extension 5 and the co-action extension l2 Which have their inner opposed faces provided with serrations are adapted to be used When the Wrench is placed on round objects such as pipes or the like, While the smooth inner opposed surfaces of the kopposite extension are used in connection with objects having fiat surfaces such as nuts or the like.
With the Wrench of the above-mentioned character, the slidable jaw may be easily and quickly adjusted to the proper size and the spring finger 21 will hold the slidable jaw, in its proper adjusted position and against accidental displacement on the shank When the object which is being turned by the Wrench is in position therein. The simplicity of my device enables the same to be manufactured at a very loiv cost and does not require the use of a complicated number of parts in order to hold the slidable jaw in its proper adjusted position.
While I have shown the preferred enibodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the size, shape, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A Wrench comprising a shank having` a jaw fixed thereto, said shank having rectangularly disposed side surfaces, the opposite side surfaces being disposed parallel with relation to each other, tWo of the opposite side surfaces being nurled, and the other two intervening side Surfaces being milled, a jaw movably mountedupon the shank and having an opening' which loosely receives the shank, two of the opposite Wall surfaces of the openings being provided with serratious adapted to engage the milled surfaces of the shanks, the said movable jaw being provided at its intervening sides with slots leading' in from opposite edges of the said movable jaiv, and spring fingers secured to the movable jaw and extending along the slot and having nurled surfaces adapt-ed to resiliently engage the nurled surfaces of the shank. y
