W. H. D. NEWTH. Horse Blanket Holden Patented Jan. 4,1881.
N-FE 'ERS. FHOTO-UTHOGRAPHER, WASHXNGTON B Q UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. D. NEWTH, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
HORSE-BLANKET HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,242, dated January 4, 1881.
Application filed November 10, 1850.
Toall whom it may concern Be it known that I,WILLIAM HENRY DAVID NEWTH, of the city of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, one of the 5 United States of America, have invented new and useful Improvements on Horse-Blanket Holders; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, where Figure l is a perspective view of my invention as applied to a section of a harness for a horse. Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
The nature of my invention relates to a new 15 and useful blanket-holder, to be attached to suitable parts of a harness, by means of which a blanket or fly-net may be readily and easily secured against accidental displacement, and from which the blanket may be disengaged, When desired, easily and without danger of tearing.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents the base-plate of my improved holder, provided with suitable holes, by means of which and any suitable screw or rivet, a, the plate may be secured to any part of the harness desired. This base-plate is provided with a pair of ears, I), to which is pivoted the lever B and a spring, (J, one end of which is riveted to the lever, while its free end rests against the top of the base and holds the lever in the position shown, except when depressed by force applied -to the elevated end of the lever. The opposite 51end of the lever is provided with a pair of ears, c, between which is journaled the roller D, which, except when the opposite end of the lever is depressed, drops into a channel,
(No model.)
01, out or cast laterally across the base-plate. These devices, being secured at suitable places 40 on each side of the harness, are ready for use.
The blanket is thrown over the harnessed horse in the usual manner. Instead of securing such blanket by means of straps and buckles, tied cords, pins, or by tucking the ends or edges thereof under parts of the barness, such ends or edges are engaged with the clips by being inserted under the roller, the opposite end of the lever being depressed for the purpose, when the blanket will be held 0 firmly in place, the roller pressing the blanket into the recess in the base, greatly facilitating this end.
To disengage the blanket, give it a quick pull without necessarily depressing the lever, and the roller will allow the blanket to slip out withoutdanger of tearing.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A spring-clip adapted, as shown, to be secured to a harness at suitable points, the same consisting of the base A, provided with the transverse channel d and spring-lever B, having the rollerD journaled thereto, for the purpose of holding a horse-blanket or fly-net in place on a horses back, substantially as described.
2. In a spring-clip, the combination of the roller D, journaled to the lever B, with the transverse channel d in the base A, constructed and operating as and'for the purposes set forth.
WILLIAM H. n. NEWTH.
In presence of H. S. SPRAGUE, J. PAUL MAYER.
