F. K. 'KOMAR Dec. 31, 1957 SHOULDER STRAP FOR SLIPS AND OTHER GARMENTS Filed June 27, 1955 2 Sheets-Sheet l INVENTOR. FRANESK-K0MAR AI'MHME) Dec. 31, 1957 F. K. KOMAR SHOULDER STRAP FOR SLIPS AND OTHER GARMENTS 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed June 2'7, 1955 @Q Q Q m f M Q 2 W JNVENTOR. FRANCES K. KOMAR BY Afllfil) Fice -SHOULDER STRAP FOR SLIPSAND OTHER 'G'ARMENTS FrancesirK. Komar, Red.Bank, :N..J.,.assignor rto Charles This invention relates to new and useful improvements in shoulder straps and shoulder strap garments.
More particularly, the present invention proposes the construction of an improved shoulder strap and shoulder strap garment which can be worn over an undergarment having a shoulder strap and which will safely and securely conceal the strap of the undergarment.
As a further object, the present invention proposes forming the shoulder strap and garment with means horizontally slidable to adjust one end of the strap for the strap to cover any shoulder strap of an undergarment regardless of where the strap of the undergarment is placed on the undergarment.
Still further, the present invention proposes constructing the shoulder strap and garment so that all adjusting parts are neatly and conveniently concealed.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings,-
and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a front view of a womans slip with shoulder straps constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the inside or back of one of the straps and a portion of the upper front of the slip shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing the rear or back of the slip and the other end of the strap shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a front view of the structure shown in Fig. 3 but with parts broken away.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the buckle shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 4 but with no parts broken away and with an adjusted position of the strap indicated in dot-dash outline.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the new shoulder straps or strap units are indicated generally by the reference numeral and are identically constructed and arranged.
Shoulder straps 15 are shown on a tubular garment 16 which as illustrated is a woman's slip or petticoat. Shoulder straps 15 have an outer cover member 17, which may be made of lace or other ornamental and soft and flexible material, and an inner member 18 preferably of flexible material also but stifler than the outer cover member and narrower. Inner member 18 may be a tape.
An inner member 18 is centrally secured as by stitches 19 to the back face 20 of an outer cover member 17 down the length or substantially the length of a strap 15 with unsecured side edge portions 21 and 22 which may be bound or otherwise reinforced for use as a track.
Straps 15 are adapted to fit over and conceal from view any undergarment shoulder strap. Straps 15 each have United States twbtends 23-and 24. End 23 of'a strap 1'5 is-disposed at "the-froIit ZS o'f'the garment 1'6. -iA'=pairof short-straps 26 ahd m are ffixed -atone =enu=- t0 the-slip 16 and *have their upperor free ends"28 and 2-9-secured to rings 30 an2181. Straps 15 63016116 throu-gh the i'ings 30 and 31 and on the end'z'ii of each'strap I5 is a buc'lile 32. In particular the inner member 18 of the strap 1 5 is-secured "t'o'o'ne end orthe 'buc ltle.
Buck-les 32 each has =one-zen'd 33 adapted to ove'ilie 'and hear' against an inner member "IS along the rearface 34 1'03? the inher member. lnwardlwritending guiiieportions as and 36ion each buxle'szsliuaul -and movael-y "engage the unsecured side edge portions 21 and 22 of each inner member 18 as shown in Figs. 2 and 6. In this manner, means is provided adjustably to secure one end of each strap 15 to garment 16 for lengthening and shortening the flexible strap 15.
At the back or rear 37 of garment 16 a front part 38 and a rear part 39 form a pocket 40 open at the top 41. A spaced pair of such pockets 40 are so formed, only one being shown. In each pocket is mounted a rod 42 secured at both ends 43 and 44 to the garment 16. A tubular slide 45 is slidably mounted on each rod 42 in the pockets. Slide 45 has an upper end portion 46 and a strap opening 47. The ends 24 of straps 15 are secured to the slides 45 extending through the strap opening 47 and being secured to the straps 15. In this manner, means is provided horizontally slidable to secure one end of each flexible strap 15 to garment 16 for moving the strap to overlie and cover an undergarment shoulder strap.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A shoulder strap construction for garments comprising a flexible strap structure adapted to fit over an undergarment shoulder strap to conceal the undergarment shoulder strap from view, said flexible strap structure having two looped ends, means adjustably to secure one end of the flexible strap to the front top edge of a garment for lengthening and shortening the flexible strap, and means horizontally slidable to secure the other end of the flexible strap structure to the rear top edge of the garment for moving the strap structure to overlie and cover an undergarment shoulder strap, said flexible strap structure having an outer elongated wider rectangular cover member and an inner elongated narrower member secured down the center portion to the outer cover member substantially the length of the two members with unsecured edge portions, said means adjustably to secure one end of the flexible strap structure to a garment being a buckle having one end secured to the inner member of the flexible strap structure and having inwardly extending guide portions slidably and movably to engage the unsecured edge portions of said inner member, said buckle having another end portion adapted slidably to fit over and bear against the inner member of the flexible strap structure, said means horizontally slidable to secure the other end of the flexible strap structure to a garment being a rod adapted to be secured at each end to the rear top edge of the garment and a tubular slide slidably mounted on the rod and having the other end portion secured to one end of the flexible strap structure.
2. A garment having a pair of shoulder strap structures, each structure comprising a flexible strap adapted to fit over and conceal an undergarment shoulder strap, said flexible straps each having two looped ends and means adjustablyto secure one end to the front top edge of the garment for lengthening and shortening the strap structure, and means horizontally slidable to secure the rear top edge of the other end to the garment for moving the strap structure to overlie and cover an undergarment shoulder strap, said flexible straps each having an outer elongated Wider rectangular cover member and an inner elongated narrower member secured down the center portion to the outer member with unsecured side edge portions, said means adjustable to secure one end of each of the flexible straps to the garment being a buckle having one end secured to the inner member, and having inwardly extending guide portions slidably and movably to engage the unsecured edge portions of said inner member, said means horizontally slidable to secure the other end of each flexible strap structure to the garment being a rod secured at spaced intervals at each end to the garment, said garment having a pocket at the rear of the garment enclosing said rod and being open at the top, and a tubular slide carried by said other end of the flexible strap and slidably mounted on said rod.
