HENRY UEWIOK, OF WESTWOOD HOUSE, ST. JOHNS HILL, WANDSWORTH,
COUNTY OF SURREY, ENGLAND.
GLOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,310, dated April 24, 1883.
Application filed October .26, 1882. (No model.) Patented in England April 1, 1882, No. 1,593.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY URWIGK,a.Sl1bject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Westwood House, St. Johns Hill, Wandsworth, in the county of Surrey, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gloves, (for which I have received Letters Patent in Great Britain, No. 1,593, dated April 1, 1882,) of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention has for its object improvements in gloves. It is applicable especially to stout leather gloves, such as are used in driving, but may also be adapted advantageously in making other gloves.
I insert on the inner side of the hand a piece passing from the base of the first and second fingers (or, rather, theinterval between those fingers) to the base of the thumb, and the same piece also forms the innerside of the thumb and the forefinger quirk, or the gusset-piece at the root of this finger. By this means I 'provide ample room in the glove around the knuckles without enlarging the glove in other parts, and I avoid seams at the interior base of the thumb, up the inner side of the pipe of the thumb, and at the bottom of the forefinger. I also obtain more freedom at the base of the forefinger, which is important in a drivingglove.
I combine the method of construction described above most advantageously with that known as the Josephine out, where the back and front of the glove are out together and are inone piece. In such gloves there is necessarily a seam between the forefinger and thumb, and of this I avail myself to insert my additional piece. The glove then consists of the following parts: first, the main piece comprising the palm and back of the hand and front and back of the fingers; second, a piece forming the outside of the thumb-tube, and which, in the case of the Josephine cut, is continued to the wrist of the glove; third, the additional piece which I have already fully described; fourth, the fourchettes and quirks between the fingers.
In the drawings annexed, Figures 1, 2, and 3 show the main pieces of which a glove is composed when the invention is applied to the Josephine out, and Fig.4c shows the completed glove. Fig. l is the main piece 0. Fig. 2 is the part comprising the outside of the thumbtube. This piece B is attached to the piece 0, Figml, along the edges marked 00 in both figures. Fig. 3 is the novelinserted part A,which is applied either to the Josephine or to other gloves, constituting the rhain feature of the invention. It is sewed to the piece Fig. 2 along the edges marked 3 in both figures, and to the part Fig. 1 along the edges marked 2.
The lower V-like portion of Fig. 3 forms the quirk and its edge, where letter V is sewed to the fourchette between the fingers.
The several pieces 0 B A are shown in the Figs.l, 2, and 3 as they are cut, and sufficiently large to allow for the seams.
I claim as of my inventiou-- 1. A glove having inserted on the inner side of the hand the piece A, of substantially the configuration described and shown, passing from between the first and second fingers to the base of the thumb and forming the inner side of the thumb, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of the main piece 0, covering the front and back ofthe hand, and the inserted piece A, with which it is connected at its two sides, the said inserted piece passing from between the first and second fingers to the base of the thumb, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination of the main piece 0, the piece B, composing the outside of the thumbtube, and the inserted piece A, allformed and united as set forth.
HENRY URWIOK.
