GLOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 4, 1920.
This invention relates to fur-lined gloves,
and aims to provide certain improvements therein.
In fur-lined gloves as previously constructed, it has been found in practice that after the glove is worn for some little time, the fur-lining is apt to either crack away at the seams or break between the seams. I have found that this is due to the fact that the outer leather of which the glove is made has a higher degree of elasticity or expansibility than the fur, with the result that as the glove is worn and the outside stretches, the strains of use fall upon the lining instead of being taken up on the stronger and more durable shell. According to the present invention I minimize or avoid this disadvantage by inserting in the lining an elastic or expansible member which permits the lining as a whole to expand, thereby avoiding the cracking or splitting of the fur-skin. Such expansible strip may be inserted at any point in the glove where the effect is desired, but I have found in practice that an elongated strip extending approximately from the wrist out to a point beyond the hand-portion of the glove serves the purpose admirably. The best position for this strip I have found is on the side opposite the thumbside of the glove, although in lieu of or in addition to this some other point may be selected.
Referring to the drawings, which illustrate one form of the invention,-
Figure 1 is a view of the back of the glove, partly in section, on the line 1-1 in Fig. 8.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 22 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail cross-section.
Referring to the drawings, let A indicate the glove as a whole which is shown as a leather glove of conventional type, and which from the interior views will be seen to comprise an outer shell B and a fur-lining C. The fur-lining in the glove shown is extended throughout the hand and fingers of the glove, although the fingers may be left unlined or lined with some other material, if desired.
The elastic or stretchable member provided by my invention is shown as comprising an elongated strip of material extending from the wrist end of the glove out to a point well past the hand-portion. This strip, which is indicated by the letter D, may be formed of any suitable expansible or stretchable material, felt being preferred on account of its stretchable qualities and also on account of its warmth. I prefer to arrange this strip of material on the side of the glove which is opposite the thumb,
and to continue it outwardly to a point which is beyond the joining of the little finger with the body of the glove. The felt strip may be sewn to the fur edges, as indicated in Fig. 4.
As the glove expands, the stretchable strip will expand with it, so that in the use of the glove, the strain is taken upon the comparatively strong and thick leather or other material of which the exterior shell is constructed.
While I have shown and described one form of the invention, it will be understood that I do not wish to be limited thereto, since various changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is:
1. A glove having an outer shell and an inner fur lining and having extensible means inserted in the fur lining.
2. A glove having an outer shell and an inner fur lining and having a strip of extensible material running lengthwise of the glove and inserted in the fur lining.
3. A glove having an outer shell and an inner fur lining and having a strip of extensible material inserted in the fur lining, extensible material extending from a point said strip arranged along the side opposite beyond the hand portion to a point apthe thumb. proximating the Wrist portion, said strip 10 4. A glove having an outer shell and an being inserted in the fur lining. 5 inner fur lining and having arranged in In Witness whereof, I have hereunto the hand portion thereof and along the side signed my name. of the glove opposite the thumb a strip of ARTHUR N; OATHOUT:
