This invention relates to improvements in gloves and has for an object the provision of means for reinforcing and strengthening the glove structure so as to resist wear at the point where the knee is pressed against the back of the hand and to form a cushion between the knee and the back of the hand of a class of workmen known as chippers.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means to cause the patch on the back of the hand to bulge outward to allow room for the heavy pad that is placed between the patch and the glove proper, which allows freedom of the hand in grasping the handle of the air hammer.
Another object of the invention is the provision of strengthening and reinforcing means as stated above, which are equally well adapted for application to mittens.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view of a glove constructed in accordance with the invention, the glove being shown in its finished form.
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view of the glove showing the position of the pad.
Figure 3 is a view of the patch that is sewed on the back of the glove, which forms the pocket that holds the pad.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the invention is shown as applied to a glove, but as previously stated, it is equally well adapted for application to a mitten, the improvements dealing with the patch and pad structure onthe back of the right hand glove only.
The invention is especially adapted for a certain class of working mens gloves and mittens. This class of workmen known as chippers, hold in their right hand an airhainmer which runs at a rapid rate of speed causing a great vibration as the workmen press the chisel end of the hammer against the steel, their right knee pressed against the back of their hand and it is at this point that the former gloves have worn out quickly and the mens hands have become swollen, calloused and bruised. Any kind of a plain patch used to reinforce this point had a tendency to cramp the hand and not allow the workman to grasp the handle of the air-hammer freely.
The present invention overcomes this and other disadvantages by providing a one piece patch with two or more V shaped notches cut in the outer edge and when this patch is stitched to the back of the glove, the notches are drawn together causing the center of the patch to bulge outward, which in turn allows plenty of room for the heavy pad to be placed between the patch and the glove proper without binding or cramping the hand when grasping the handle of the air-hammer.
The pad as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings and designated by the numeral 5 forms a cushion between the hard bones of the knee and the knuckles.
Figure 3, number 2, shows the reinforcing patch before it is stitched to the back of the glove, the V shaped notches being open. In Figure 1, number 4, shows the patch after it is stitched to the glove with the V shaped notches closed, causing the center of the patch to bulge outward, leaving room for the heavy pad as shown in Figure 2, number 5.
- The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is Y 1. In gloves the right hand only having a reinforcing member secured to the back of the glove and extending from the base of the fingers to the wrist, and a heavy pad placed between said member and glove.
2. In gloves, the right hand only having a reinforcing member secured to the back of the glove and extending from the base of the fingers to the wrist, V shaped notches cut in the outer edge of the member, and said notches being drawn together in securing it to the back of the glove, heavy padding being placed between said reinforcing member and glove.
