To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT G. HANFORD, Jr., of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and Stateof Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fastenings for Straps and Like Articles, of which the following is a specification.

The principal object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective device for fastening to the halite-rings a breast-strap, such as is employed in double harness for backing and holding back a vehicle.

My invention consists in a fastener provided with means wherehyit may be attached to a strap, and comprising certain novel features of construction, which are hereinafter particularly described, and set forth in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an edge view of a breast-strap and fastenings embodying my improvement, one of the fastenings being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the fasteningsand a buckle connected therewith, and Fig. 3 is a plan of the fastening and buckle on a larger scale.

D designates fasteners for securing the straps to the hame-iings E. These fasteners are here shown as made integral with the buckles B; but I do not wish to be restricted to their use with buckles. If to be used with the ordinary doubled long straps, or with chains, they may be provided with loops for receiving the straps or chains. Each fastener consists essentially of straight and approximately-parallel portions g, extending from the bar d, a. rounded loop, 0, of greater diameter laterally than the distance between the straight parallel portions g, and a rigid tongue, f, ex-

tending backward from the center of the outer portion of the loop, and having its end turned in between the straight portions 9. The loop e is bent aside in the direction of its length, and the tongue f is also bent longitudinally, butin the opposite direction to the bend of the loop. The loop 0 is sufficiently long to slip over a Dame-ring E, and the space between the tongnefand either of the straight portions 9 is sufficiently wide to receive the ring when it is turned into a position parallel with the tongue.

To fasten the breast strap or straps to a name-ring, the fastener is slipped over the ring so that the ring will fit between one side of the loop and i s tongue, as shown in Fig. 2, and then the fastener is twisted so as to pass the tongue through the ring. The ring will then lie between the eye formed by the bend of the loop and the reverse bend of the tongue,and as the ring bears against thesides of the loop, as shown in Fig. 3, the latter will tend to prevent the canting or twisting of the ring. Although especially designed for use with hatne-rtngs, the fastener may be put to various uses.
