W. T. MOORE.
COMBINED SAGK EOLDER AND SCALE.
Patented Jan. 2, 1883.
f INVENTOR T j/0vw WWITNESSES v %2 ATTORN EYS A UNITED STATES ILLIAM T. MOORE,
COMBINED SACK-H PATENT OFFICE.
OLDER AND SCALE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,094, dated January 2, 1883.
Application filed October 17, 1882. (X model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM T. MoonE, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of Richview, in the county of Washington and State of Illinois, have invented a newand valuable Improvement in Combined Sack-Holders and Scales; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same,
reference being had 'to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of this invention in a perspective view. Fig. 2
isa detail in perspective, and shows the spreaders with their holding branches and teeth.
This invention has relation to weighing devices for the use of grocers and others in filling paper sacks with grain, sugar, flour, and
other articles; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the base, fulcrum-post, and balance-beam pivoted thereto, the suspended receiver and spring-scale, the adjustable chain connecting the lower end of 2 spring-scale to the base, and the lateral holding-spreaders attached to the top of the fulcrum-post and projecting on each side of the front end of the balance-beam, all as hereinafter set forth.
0 In the accompanying drawings, the letterA designates the base or bed plate, to which is secured the fulcrum-post B, the upper end of which is slotted or bifurcated to receive the balance-beam O, which is pivoted therein at 5 d,'its arms extending in front and in rear of said-post, and provided at their extremities with hooks e e.
To the upper end of the post B are secured the lateral spreaders D, which project on each 40 side of the't'ront arm of the balance-bar O, and
are provided at their ends with outwardlyturned holding-branches g, which are serrated or provided with catch projections or teeth h on their outer edges, as shown in the drawings.
To the rear hook, c, of the balance-bar is attached the spring-scale E, which is also connected to the ring or staple k in the base A by an adjustable chain, 1, composed of large links, so that it can be taken up or let out, as may be desired. The upper end of this chain 1 is provided with a snap-hook, 122.
To the i1 ont hook, c, of the balance-bar is connected the armor bow-handle of the receiver F, said handle consisting of two branches, H, which are curved outward and downward, and then inward and forward under the plate of the receiver, and are rigidly attached thereto. These arms are spread open in this manner in order that there may be no obstruction when the sack is placed with its lower end on.the receiver. Inthis position thespreader-branches g are introduced into its mouth and serve to hold it open for the introduction of the grain, flour, or other article. As the sack is being filled the scale in rear indicates the Weight.
Sometimes it may be advisable to provide a rack adjustment for the fulcrumpost, so that the balance-bar can be raised or lowered.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The combined sack-holder and weighing de-' vice, consisting of the baseA, fulcrum-post B, balance-bar G, suspended receiver F, springscale E, adjustable chain l, and lateral holding-spreaders D, attached to the upper end at the post, and having outwardly-turned catchbranches g, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have So hereunto subscribed my name in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM THOMAS MOORE.
