Description

(No Mode1.)
A. H. $MITH.
BAG HOLDER. No. 361,461. Patented Apr. 19, 1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT HAMILTON SMITH, or BEAULIEU, DAKOTA TERRITORY.
BAG-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming. part of Letters Patent No. 361,461 dated April 19 1887.
Application filed July 3, 1886. Serial No. 207,076. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT HAMILTON SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beaulieu, in the county of Pembina, Dakota Territory, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Holders; and I do declare thefollowing to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to means for holding and supporting bags-such as grain-bags-during the process of filling.
The object of my improvement is to provide a device for holding bags, which shall be inexpensive, simple, easily manipulated, and not liableto get out of order. With the above object in view my invention consists in the following construction of parts, which will first be fully. described, and the points of noveltythen set forth in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe it in detail, designating the'same parts by the same letters of reference.
The figure is a perspective view of a bagholdcr embodying my invention.
A represents a curved wire, preferably of semicircular form, and of considerable stiffness, sufficient to hold and keep distended the mouth ofa bag during the process of filling.
B B are two upright levers, to each of which one end of wire A is attached.
0 is a stretcher or bar interposed between the two levers B B, and to which the latter are fulcrumed.
D is a rope, chain, or wire secured at both ends to the upper ends of the upright levers B B.
Midway of the rope D is fastened a spiral spring, E, which in turnis secured toa hanger, either by the intervention of rope or chain F, or without, by being attached directly to a hanger or hook.
If desired, the rope D may be hung. direct from a hook and the spring dispensed with. A spring steelyard or other weighing device may be substituted for the spring E. The spring E has an open hook at either end, adapted to readily engage with the ropes D and F.
The stretcher 0 passes through a hole, a, in each of the upright levers B B, said holes being enlarged at their outer ends, so as to give the levers freedom of movement. The inner ends of the holes a a bear against shoulders on the stretcher O. I may use other known means of pivoting thelevers to thestretcher, if deemed expedient.
The semicircular wire A is placed within the mouth of the sack, (preferably underneath the hem of the cloth,) and the tension of the rope D, caused by the weight of the bag-holder attached thereto, distends the curved wire A, and consequently the mouth of the bag.
A grab-hook adapted to seize the rope F in any part of its length may be secured to the upper end of spring E, so as to readily vary the height of the holder.
In operation it is advisable to set the bagholder so that the bottom of the empty sack shall be about three or four inches from the floor. The first bucket of grain (if the device be used in bagging grain) will bring it down to the door. This spring movement allows the bottom of the sack to fill without any folds.
Having described my invention, whatIclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A bag-holder comprising a curved flexible wire, a lever secured to each end of said wire, a stretcher interposed between said levers, to which the latter are fulcrumed, anda rope or chain connecting the upper ends ofsaid levers, as set forth.
2. A bag-holder comprising a curved flexible wire, a lever secured to each end of said wire, a stretcher interposed between said 1evers, to which the latter are fulcrumed, a rope or chain connecting the upper ends of said levers, and a spring arranged above the rope, as
set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT HAMILTON SMITH.
