UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NOBBORNE BERKELEY, OF ALDIE, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND CHARLES B. WILDMAN, 0F LEESBURG, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED CARRIAGE-JACKS, BAG-HOLDERS, AND WEIGHING-SCALES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,678, dated September 5, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NORBOENE BERKELEY, of Aldie, in the county of Loudoun and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Conibined Carriage-J ack, Bag-Holder, and Weighing- Scale, of which the following is a specification:
My combined implement constitutes a carriage or wagon-jack of simple and eiiicient form, adjustable to suit carriages of any height, and when desired may be instantly adapted to serve as a bag-holder, and may also be used for weighing gra-iii or other material with which the bags are filled.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete implement as used for the purposes of a bagliolder and for weighing grain. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of a portion of the beam and the bag-holding attachment.
B represents a bed, which may be supported on wheels A A, so as to be conveniently moved from place to place. From this bed rise two standards, C D. rIhe standard C is made extensible by an upper standard, C', adapted to slide within the lower part of the standard and secured by pins c placed in either of the apertures c. E represents a beam, mortised` to it over the upper 'end of the standard C', on which it is supported by a fulcrunrpin, F,wlien the iniplement is to be used as a carriage-jack. rlhe rear end of the beam E, which is depressed to raise the carriage-axle in a customary manner, is held down at any desired point by means of a pin, G, placed in any one of the holes d in the standard D, or a customary ratchet-rack may be employed for this purpose.
To adapt the implement for use as abag-hol der I employ a yoke, II, formed substantially as represented in the drawiii g, which may i'it beneath the forward end of the beam and rest upon the lugs I, projecting over each side thereof. The ends of this yoke, being turned inward, forni gudgeons to support a ring, J which is provided on its under side with teeth j in order to hold the mouth of the bag, which in use is passed upward through the said ring, folded around the same, and caught over the said teeth, in the manner represented in Fig. 1. rlhe bag is thus held in the most convenient manner for iilling, and when filled a spring-balance, K, or a suitable weight, applied in any manner to the rear end ot' the beam, adapts the apparatus to fulfill all the functions ot' a weighing-scale. For this purpose, instead of the fulcrunrpin F, I prefer to employ an axis, L, formed on its under side with a knife-edge as represented in Fig. 2, which edge rests in a suitable bearing in the standard C', so as to poise the beam with sufficient delicacy for weighing purposes.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combined carriage-j ack and bag-liolder, constructed and arranged to operate substantially as herein set forth.
2. The arrangement of the bea-ni E, yoke H, toothed ring J, and standards C D with the scales K, all constructed and operated substantially as and for the purposes stated.
NORBORNE BERKELEY.
