B. WILT. Gombined Truck and Bag-Holder.
No. 220,105. Patented Sept. 30, I879.

BENJAMIN WILT, OF PETERSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED TRUCK AND BAG-HOLDER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 220,105, dated September 30, 1879 application filed June 28, 1879.
To albwhom it may concern:
Be it known that 'I, BENJAMIN WILT, of Petersburg, in the county of Huntingdon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Truck and Bag Holder; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in combined truck and bag-holder; and it consists in the combination of a truck, two standards placed thereon, and a pivoted bag-holder, whereby the bag can be tilted up so as to fall directly upon a mans shoulder without his having to strain himself in lifting it, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, showing the bag ready to be filled. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the holder tilted over ready to drop the bag on the mans shoulder. Fig. 3 is an end View of my invention.
a, represents a truck, of suitable length and width, and which is supported upon the two or more wheels 0 at one end and the legs or blocks atthe other. In each end of this truck are made two holes, in which the lower ends of the two standards 0 are fastened by means of pins or other suitable devices which pass through the ends underneath the truck. In the upper ends of these standards is pivoted the bag-holder, which is made in the form of a hand-truck, with the exception that the upper ends of the side beam-s,.cl, are not provided with handles, and which holder can be tilted back, as shown in Fig. 2, for the purpose of enabling a man to drop the bag over upon his shoulder without the great. efl'ort usually required to lift it there.
The two supporting-arms e, for supporting the upper end of the bag in an open position, are secured to the cross-beam g, which beam and arms are provided upon their top with small pegs to catch in the bags, instead of the usual hooks. The ends of this beam 9 catch in the slots h of the side beams, d, so that it can be adjusted up and down to accommodate the length of bag being filled, and the beam and arms are held at. any desired height by means of the pins 1'.
Upon the back of the bag-holder is secured the strengtheningframc l, which is made of small bariron or wood. in order to prevent the lower end of the bag from tipping forward while the holder is being turned over there is a rope, a, tied to one standard, and which is provided with a hook at its free end, so as to catch in a ring on the other standard. This rope passes around the outer side of the bag, and holds it in position until the man is ready to have the bag fall forward on his shoulder.
After the bag has been filled and the mouth tied up the man pulls the holder toward him, and depresses the upper end thereof until the top of the bag comes down to his knees, when he has only to put his arms around the bag and pull it over on his shoulder.
By this construction a man is saved that great straining effort which is necessary to lift a filled bag from the floor up to his shoulder.
The standards carrying the holder can be placed upon either end or side of the truck for use, according as the place'aud circumstances may require. The handle of the truck being pivoted to-it can be readily swung around out of the way when not in use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination of a truck and a pivoted bag-holder placed thereon, substantially as shown.
2. The combination of the two uprights or standards, a suitable support, and a bag-holder pivoted at or near its center-upon the. supports so that itcan be turned about one-half around, and provided with means for holding the mouth of the bag open, whereby after the bag has been filled a man can tilt it over upon his shoulder, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of a truck provided with standards with a pivoted bag-holder, the holder being provided with adjustable sup porting-arms, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 23d day of June, 1879.
BENJAMIN wwr.
