Description

neta sala naar esta CHARLES A. WHELAN AND CHARLES T. WAKELEY, or MADISON, Wisconsin.
Letters PatentNo. 110,707, dated January 3, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT lN BAG-FILLlNG AND WElGHlNG-MACHINES.
The Schedule referred to these Letters Patent and making paxt of the same.
Be it known that we, CHARLES A. WHELAN. and -CHARLES T. WAKELEY, bot-h of Madison, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Machine for Holding and Filling Bags and Weighing Grain and Produce, called Bag-Filling and lVeighing-ltlachine5 and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exaotdescription of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front view;
Figure 2 is a side view; and
Figure 3 is a view of the pin for tightening the bag.
lo construct our machine we make four legs, A A, five and a half feet long by two inches square, and insert the same at their upper ends in a plank, B, about two and one-half feet long, eight inches wide, and two inches thick, the lower ends of the legs being yspread to the right and left about five feet apart. In
the said plank B we fix the pulley C, so that its left side will be back of the center of said plank, the journais of the' pulley resting on its upper surface. We then place the windlass D, consisting of a roller and crank, at a convenient height for the hand, upon the outer sidey of the two right-hand legs, supported by proper boxes,'E E, and we attach a rope, F, to said roller, passing the same over the pulley 0,'and attaching the other end of said rope, by means of the double hook hereafter described, to four cords, G G, which support from its corners the hopper H, made llarge lenough to hold the contents of an ordinary bag.
Upon the front of said hopper we fasten the circularblock I, properly perforated or bored for the movable pin K, which tapers toward the lower end, where it is enlarged, and which is also forked in the shape cfa clothes-pin some two inches from its lower end, and has a smaller pin inserted through its upperend for turning with the hand. The lower sides of said hopper are furnished withv a cleat, making a rim around the same.
Said roller is furnished with the ratchet Land latch M, which latch is fastened so as to support itself when elevated upon the leg over the roller.
Above the edges of the hopper, when elevated, are placed the stops N N upon the legs.
From thelplank B, at the left of the center, we suspend a pair of beam scales, the weight to the left, and having its hook below and slightly to the front of the center of said plank B, and sutliciently elevated to conveniently hook into the double hook O,v which connects the cords G G with the rope Ill. hopper H is provided with the slide I at the bottom.
To operate our machine wc extend the mouth of the bag over the month of the hopper, placing the front edge of the bag in the fork of the pin K, which pin is then twisted until the slack ofthe bag is taken up. The pin will rest firmly in its socket and hold thc loaded bag in its place.
By means of the windlass the hopper can be lowered or raised to the desired height for lling with a shovel or measure, and when sufficient has been placed in the hopper, by raising to the stops o r the height of the bag, and removing the slide, the bag will be lled ready for removal.
It' desired to weigh the contents,v the hopper, when loaded, is elevated so that the hook of the scales can be inserted in the double hook of the hopper, the crank is turned backward, and the load is suspended on the scales and weighed. The bag is then attached as described, and contents of hopper emptied, by drawing thesiide.
To weigh articles not to be pntwin bags, the hopper can be detached and the article inserted in the double hook, hauled up, and weighed in the same mauner.
That we claim as our invention, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The pin K, provided with cross-pin p and slot a, in combination with block I on hopper 1I, when connected and arranged as shown, and for the purpose specified.
2. lhe combination ofthe hopper II, having block I and pin K, with the frame A, windlass I), and scales S, when all constructed, arranged, and operated as shown, for the purpose described.
C. A. IVHELAN. CHARLES T. WAKELEY.
