Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
GEORGE H. SMITH, OF DES MOINES, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED BAG-HOLDER AND ELEVATOR..
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,183, dated April 14, lb.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. SMITH, of Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Elevator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accomi panyin g drawings, forming a part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section of my invention, taken in the plane indicated by the line m w, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
Similar letters of reference in both views inv dicate corresponding parts.
The principal object of this invention is to enable the laborer to ll grain-bags without assistance and to elevate the same to a convenient height from the iioor to load them onto his shoulder without having to stoop over or require other help.
The invention consists in the arrangement of a movable frame containing a rising and falling platform secured to a sliding rod, from which, at a convenient height, two curved arms extend, which are provided with hooks to attach a bag for filling the same, in combination with a windlass, zatchet, and pawl in such a manner that a bag, on being suspended from the hooks on the curved arms can be convenient-ly iilled, and when full' the platform can be readily raised by means of the windlass, and retained at a convenient height by the ratchet and pawl, thus enabling one man to ll the bags and lift them onto his shoulder without any assistance, the whole being so arranged that it can be conveniently moved from one place to another and put up wherever the elevator is to be used.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A represents a frame, made of timber or other suitable material, and of suliicient strength and height for the occasion. This frame is provided with a vertical guideway, a, formed by two strips, b, which are secured to the lower and upper cross-timbers of the frame A, and said way forms the guide for rising and falling bar B, to which the platform O is secured. This platform", is steadied by two curved rods, c, in front, and by rods d in the rear, and all those rods are fastened to a cross-bar, e, which is rigidly attached to the rising and falling bar B at a convenient distance above the platform.
D are two curved arms, which connect in the middle, being firmly secured to the rising and falling bar B. A slot, f, in said bar allows of adjusting the curved arms higher or lower, as may be desirable. These arms are provided with hooks g, which are in such a position that an ordinary grain-bag can be conveniently suspended from the same for the purpose of lling it. The rising and falling bar B is suspended from a rope, h, which is secured with one end to a staple, i', inserted into one of the upper cross-timbers of the frame A, and which extends under a pulley or she-ave, j, and over another sheave, k, its other end being made fast to a stud or staple, l, projecting from the circumference of a windlass, E. The sheave j has its bearings in a block, j', secured to the rear surface of the rising and falling bar B, and the sheave la is fastened in a block, lc, suspended from the top of the frame A. The windlass is arranged on the rear of the frame A, and it has its bearings in suitable journalboxes secured to two of the uprights of said frame. It is operated by means ot' a winch, m, and a ratchet-wheel, n, and pawl o enables the operator to raise the platform to any convenient height and arrest the windlass without other assistance. .A hook, F, secured in the top of the frame A, is intended to support a steelyard or scales for the purpose of ascertaining the weight of each bag after the same has been filled. By this arrangement a bag can be filled without assistance by suspending it from the hooks on the curved arms, which are adjustable to a convenient height, according to the size of the bag, and when filled each bag can be readily elevated to a convenient height to allow the laborer to load it onto his shoulder without stooping down.
I do not claim as my invention thev rising and falling platform in the movable frame, neither do I claim the windlass, nor the ratchet- Wheel and pawl; but,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the adjustable arms D and hooks g with the movable frame A, rising and falling platform C, rope la, windlass E, ratchet-wheel a, and pawl o, all constructed and operating in the manner and for the purpose setforth.
