OBED HaMITCI-IELL, OF SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI.
COMBINED CANT-HOOK AND LBFTENG=JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,765, dated May 20, 1884.
Application filed March 25, 188 1.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ()BED H. 'hlITdHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Greene and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Oant-Hooks and LiftingJacks, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is a new and useful combined cant-hook and lifting-jack, the object of which is to provide a simple, convenient, and strong device for raising, supporting, and handling heavy bodies, and for rolling logs, 850., by one man. These objects I accomplish by means 'of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the entire device. Fig. 2 shows the cant-hook detached. Fig. 3 is a detailed view.
A is a standard or post, of any desired size and of any suitable material. It has a foot, E, composed of two pieces, 0 e, bolted to the sides at its lower end, to steady the same and to keep it fromsinking into the ground. Beneath the front part of this foot E is secured a toe-piece, J, made with a sharp edge, to prevent the device from slipping back when lifting, and especially when lifting railway-ties. In the front edge of the said standard are cutnotches a; or a plate containing notches may be secured to the same. In-this standard are holes a, for adjusting the lever in height.
B is a lever composed of two pieces, I) b, which are secured to each other at the long end by any suitable device, as a bolt, 1) and detachably secured on each side of the standard by a bolt or pin, D which is easily removed. Deta-ehably connected with the long end of this lever is a supporting-rod, D, which is formed into a link, d d, at its lower end to encircle the standard and engage the notches a, the upper end having a loop or a hook, d", to engage a bolt, 1), so as to supporta weight raised upon a hook, O, detachably secured to the short end of the lever.
G are plates secured to each of the pieces (No model.) I
Z) b, and having an edge, 9, bent to fit over the upper edge ofthe said pieces at b and I), and to fit beneath the lower edge at 11 Through these plates are holes for receiving the bolts 5 1) 12 These plates prevent the lever from splitting and give the hook C the full strength of the lever.
O is a hook, having holes 0, preferably made long and curved, as shown, and has a forked toe, c c, for catching, holding, and steadying a log or tie while being raised and supported upon them, and the ends of the said toes are made sharp to catch the leg when used as a cant-hook. The lever has holes for bolts I) b, to attach the said hook when the lever is detached from the standard, as shown in Fig. 2.
The device thus constructed may be used by one man for rolling and loading heavy logs upon a wagon. It may also be used as a wagon-jack, and for raising ties of a railway and holding them up until they are clamped, and for other purposes.
Having thus described the construction, use, and operation of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A lifting-jack composed of a standard, A, having notches a, holes a, and a foot, E, composed of two pieces, 6 e, and having a toe-piece, J, in combination with a lever, B, composed of two pieces, I) b, detachably secured to the said standard, and having holes for bolts b Z1 b, and a rod, D, which forms a link, (I d, and a hook, (7. and with a hook, 0, having holes 0, and a forked toe, c c, all arranged and constructed substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of plates G, having the edge turned back, with a lever, B, composed of two pieces and having holes for bolts If I) I), and a supportingrod, D, which has a link, d d, and a hook, (1 a hook, G, which has sharp spreading toes c c and holes 0, together with a standard, A, having holes a, notches a, and a foot-piece, E, which has a toe-piece, J, all substantially as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of a cant-hook composed of a lever, B, havingholes for bolts 1) b b b b and )lates G to which is detachablv In testimon whereof I affix 111 signature in 2 I y y w secured ahook, 0, having holes 0 and toes c 0, presence of two wltnesses.
with a device composed of astandard, A, having holes a, notches a, and a foot, E, composed OBED H. MITCHELL. of two pieces, 6 e, beneath the front end of which is a toe-piece, J and a rod, D, having \Vitnesses:
a link (Z d, and hook (Z all arranged and con; SEWARD A. HAsELTINE,
structed substantially as shown and described. J T. WVHITE.
