Description

J. s. COVERT. SACK-HOLDERS.
Patented Aug. 28,1877.
Inventor UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JOHN S. COVERT, OF MODESTO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT lb] SACK-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,584, dated August 28, 1877; application filed July 9, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. COVERT, of the town of Modesto, county of Stanislaus and State of California, have invented a Device for Holding Sacks for Filling; and I do hereby declare the following to be a lull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to a novel device for holding sacks and keeping them open while being filled, theconstruction being such that any sized sack can be instantly adjusted when empty and released when full.
The accompanying drawing is a view of my device.
A is a frame or standard, to which the holding apparatus is to be secured. This frame may be made independent, and of such a height as to conveniently support a sack in any open space or field for the purpose of filling it with any articles, as potatoes; or it may represent the side of a machine like a thrashing-machine, so as to enable the sack to be filled directly from the machine. A bar, B, is journaled to the face of the frame A, so as to stand horizontally across its front, and from this bar two tubes, 0, project toward the front and at right angles. Rods or bars D slide in these tubes, and have their outer ends united by a cross-bar, E. The ends of this cross-bar are provided with projecting points F, and in the center is a sort of loop or handle, G, by which to turn up the device and hook it out of the way, a point, H, being formed upon the frame for the purpose. The ends of the bar B have points I projecting backward, as
shown.
The operation will be as follows: The device being let down to a horizontal position, and the bars D being pushed into the tubes 0, a sack is hooked upon the rear hooks or points I, and its front edge is held by drawing the bars D forward until the points penetrate and hold the sack, and it will be manifest that by this arrangement the device is ren dered readily adjustable to any sized sack. The weight upon the bars D prevents their sliding back readily, and the sack is thus held. When full and distended the bars are slightly raised by the handle G, and thus relieved from the binding friction in the tubes, when they maybe easily slipped back, so as to release the front of the sack, while the turning up of the device will release the .rear points.
The handle is hooked upon the point H, and a the sack is removed.
I have employed in my practice a pair of these sack-holders, side by side, and having a tilting spout between them, by which they could be alternately used; but this device is not shown in the present case.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. The horizontal barB, with its backwardlyprojecting points I, in combination with the tubes 0, with their sliding bars D, and points or hooks F, the whole forming an adjustable bag-holder, substantially as described.
2. The horizontal bar B, journaled as shown, and the backwardly-projecting points I. together with the adjustable bars D and points F, in combination with the looped handle G, by which the device can be raised and the sack automatically released, substantially as herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
JOHN S. COVERT. [L. s.]
