The fourth or lengthwise slot 45 is relatively short and lies substantially between the top and bottom ends of the spiraliform slot 43. As with the other slots, the inner side edge of this one is referred to and indicated as the fourth or lengthwise cam element 46.

34 and 44. v V "The cover 60 is made of a thin flexible metal or plastic sheet and is slidably mounted in the longitudinally extending flattened housing I0. The aforedescribed membersand parts are assembled as follows. First the cup 50 is inserted -in the tube 3| of the shell withthe pin 5| projecting through the longitudinal slot 33. The sleeve;.40 is wrapped around the tube 3| and positioned so that the pin 5| projectsthrough' Next, the cover 60 is placed on the sleeve member 40 so that the lug 65 projects inward and through both the fourth or lengthwise slot and the second or irregular slot 35.

When assembled in this manner the cover 60 will move downward when the shell 30 is turned 3 to the right or clock-wise in the sleeve 40 and will move upward when the shell is rotated in the opposite direction. It should be noted at this point that .when theshell is rotated in the sleeve the cup will move in one direction for the length of the longitudinal slot 33 while at the same time the cover 60 will move in the opposite direction for the length of the lengthwise slot 45.

The assembly and fit of the casein over the sleeve 40 should be tight so that once assembled the case and sleeve act as asi'ngleunit and so that they arenot too easily separated. The lower edge of the case should allow th'e shell 30 to freely turn when the grip. thereof is rotated. I l j One of the principalfeaturesor advantages that this device has over" other similar devices is that it can contain a full length cosmetic pencil. Other similar automatically operating lipstick holders can not do this. For a better understanding of this particular'feature, attention is directed to United States Patent 2,064,557 which shows a means for automatically and's imultaneously openingaholder cover and raisingthelipsticktherein. ,There' it will bejobserved that the lipstick pencil must' be. very much shorter than the length ofthe availablespace inft'hecontainer. This shortening of the lipstick is ther efore necessary to prevent the top'o'fth lipstick from reaching the opening before the cover is fully opened.

The relative or requiredinovement of thecover 6|) is'about half that of the cup 50"and'for that reason the irregular slot 35 has a rather large circumferential portion 31 which does not act on the lug 65. When the lug 65 reaches the bot- "tom of the lengthwise slot 45 and thecircumferential portion 31 it will stop moving even though V .;the lipstick continues to be projected throughthe .opening Similarly 'when the'operation is'reversed and the lipstick is withdrawn, the lipstick will move inward a substantial distance'befo're the cover 50 starts to move upward to close the opening.

It'will now be clear that there is provided a device which accomplishes the-objectives heretofore set forth. While the invention has been, dis- ;closed in a preferred and a modified form; it is to be understoodthatthe" specific embodiments thereof as described and "illustrated herein are not to be considered in a, limited sense asthere may be other forms or modifications of the invention which should also be construed to come within the scope of the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

l. A cosmetic holder, comprising in combination, a case member including a hood portion at the top thereof and having a first opening on the bottom thereof, the said hood portion having parallel tracks therein and a second opening between spec'tive pin and lug therein being formed and positioneddn a manner whereby rotationiofthe said grip portion in'onerdirection with respect 170' the casean'emb'erwillcause the said cover to move away from .the second opening and .cause the said cosmetic to -.project' therethrou-gh and whereby; rotation ofithe gripportioninthe oppositedireo-' tion-:will cause the; cosmetic to return through the said opening and cause-the cover thereof .to close.

2. A cosmetic holder, comprising in combination, a case member including a hood portion at the top thereof and having a first opening on the bottom thereof, the said hood portion having parallel tracks therein and a second opening between the said tracks, a shell member including a tubular portion inside the case member and a grip portionin the aforesaid first opening, the said tubular portion having first and second cam elements thereon, a sleeve member mounted between the case and shell members and having third and fourth cam elements thereon, a cup adaptable for retaining the said cosmetic movably mounted inside the shell member andhaving a pin thereon movable by the first and third cam elements, and a unitary flexible cover for the aforesaid second opening movable on the said' tracks and having a lug thereon movable by the said second and fourth cam elements, the members and the associated cam elements and the reable with the aforesaid spiraliform and longitudinal cams, and a unitary flexible cover for the aforesaid second opening movably mounted,

A cosmetic holder, comprising in combina- .tion, a substantially cylindrical case member having a first opening in-th bottom end there- I of and including a longitudinally extending fiat;- tened cover housing having re-entrant side edges defining parallel track elements extending across the top of the said case member and forming a hood having parallel tracks therein and asecond opening between the said tracks, a sleeve member 'insidethe said case member and attached thereto, the, said sleeve member having a spiraliform cam thereon and a lengthwise cam thereon, the said spiraliform cam having a lateral portion, a shell member including a tubular portion inside of the sleeve member androtatable thereinv and including a grip portion extending through the said first opening, the saidtubular portion having a longitudinal cam and janirregular cam thereon, the irregular cam having a circumferential portion, a cup adaptable for retaining the said cosmetic movably mountedinside of the shell member and having a pin'thereon slidably engageable with the aforesaid spiraliform and longitudinal cams, and an unitary flexible cover for the aforesaid second opening slidably mounted in the said housing between the said track elements and having a lug thereon slidablyengageable with the aforesaid lengthwise and irregular cams, the members, pin and lug and their respective cams being formed and 'positioned in a manner whereby rotation of the grip portion in onev direction will cause the uni- .to first move inwardrand thereafter. cause-the cover to move upward in its housing. t
