1 This invention'relates to lipstick holders and has-as its" general object the provision "of a lipstickholderhaviing a holding cup or holding cup assembly arranged in such a manner as to expedite the replacement of old, consumed lipstick stubs. This object is achieved by providing a lipstick holder eupwhich is removably securable within the main carrier attached to the actuating mechanism of the lipstick holder. This construction allows separation of the lipstick holder cup from the "lipstick holder proper for expeditious removal and replacement of the old lipstick stub, thereby eliminating the attendant diaficultiesencountered in lipstick holders of conventional-type wherein the lipstick carriercannot be removed without irreparable'damage and loss of function to the lipstick holder.
It is another object of the invention to provide a lipstick holder for the accommodation of lipsticks of different sizes and diameters, thereby 6 Gla-ims. This object is achieved by providing a lipstick'holder cup of springy, resilient material which is further designed for expansion or con-traction from its normal'size and shape as determined by the diametrical size of the particular lipstick selected for use. This latter property of flexible accommodation may be imparted to the holder cup or holder cup assembly by means of a split or slotted construction in the resilient material thereof by resilientl overlapping the material upon itself in a manner more fully described below or by other means.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a lipstick holder of the character indicatedwhich can be cheaplyand easily fabricated from a minimum number of parts and which will be attractive in appearance and durable and efiicient in use.
The above objects as well as additional objects and advantages will readily appear in the course of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. l is a view partly in section of a lipstick holder of the swivel type embodying the features of the invention and illustrating the holder cup assembly in fully extended position;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. l but with the holder cup assembly in retracted position, the lipstick being illustrated in dot-and-dash outline;

- Fig. leis 'a sectional view Of'thB modified'hol'ding cupta'ken along "line' i 0-18 of Fig." 9.
-Referring-first to' Figs. 1 .and'2 of the drawing, the lipstick-holder cal groove I 211., said-intermediate sleeve and said outer "casing being'associatedin a manner to pre-. vent relative movement 'therebetween, an inner guide sleeve l3-provided-with-a longitudinal slot ESmand-terminating 'at its 'lovverendin an enlarged head l4 and a lower cap fixed to' the enlarged head-i4 and having its shoulders in abutment against the lower-"extremity of outer cas The guide sleeve 13 may be rotated within the intermediate sleeve I Zby manipulation'of' the eX- ternal cap 1 5*which is aiiixed to theenlarged head portionM of said guide sleeve. A lipstick carrier cup I 6 is 'slidably'mounted within 'theinner' guide sleeve l3 and is providedwith a lateral projection orany-othersuitable resilient material and is formed with-an annul-ar, radially outward-1y --extending groove-i8- intermediate its top and bottom. The carrier cup I-G-isfurther providedwith a .pluralityvorspaced, longitudinal slots |9eXtend-' ing downwardly from the top edge thereof tode- 11) comprises an outer casing ll;-a ninter1nediate -sleeve 12 provided with a hel'i-' The present invention departs fine separate side wall sections |6a and to permit expansion and contraction from its normal configuration for a purpose to be described below.
A lipstick holder cup 20 of spring steel or any other suitable resilient material is provided for removable insertion within the carrier cup is. Holder cup 20 is preferably provided with a top flange 2| to limit the insertion of said cup within the carrier cup l6 and to facilitate removal therefrom. Suitably disposed between top flange 2| and the bottom of the holder cup 20 is an annular, radially outwardly extending protuberance 22 engageable in the complementary groove |8 of carrier cup I6 upon insertion of the holder cup 20 therewithin. In order to accommodate lipsticks of different diametral sizes, the holder cup 20 which, in the first instance, is constructed of springy, resilient material may be provided with a plurality of spaced longitudinal slots 23 extending downwardly from the top flange 2| and below the annular protuberance 22. This construction permits the internal diameter of holder cup 20 to be enlarged to accommodate a lipstick 25 of increased diameter, as illustrated clearly in Fig. 4A, or to be diminished to accommodate a lipstick of smaller diameter 26, as illustrated in Fig. 4. It is obvious that the holder cup 20 may be adjusted to retain a large variety of lipsticks of different diametral sizes and this is a considerable advantage over known and available lipstick holders of conventional design.
When it is desired to replace a worn lipstick, the carrier cup l6 with the retained holder cup 20 is extended to the top of the lipstick holder 7 in the customary and conventional manner whereupon the holder cup 20 may be removed by a pushing and lifting motion from its engagement within carrier cup IS. The presence of the top flange 2| greatly facilitates this latter operation. After removal of the holder cup 20 from its retained position within the carrier cup IS, the worn lipstick may be easily removed using a pin, pen knife or similar instrument which may be inserted into the lipstick through one of the longitudinal slots 23. If desired, the bottom of holder cup 20 may have an opening therein (not shown) to further expedite the operation. A fresh lipstick may now be pushed easily into the holder cup 20 simultaneously squeezing the split holder cup between the fingers to assure a firm hold on the lipstick. If desired, the holder cup 20 may have a projection or prong (not shown).struck out from the body thereof to assist in positively retaining the lipstick. The holder cup 20 with the fresh lipstick retained therein is now inserted within the carrier cup l6 in its extended position at the top of the lipstick holder and pushed downwardly until it snaps into proper position with its annular protuberance 22 engaged within the cooperating annular groove l8 in the carrier cup 16, and with the bottom of its top flange 2| in abutment against the top edge of carrier cup IS. The carrier cup |6 with its retained holder cup 20 and lipstick may then be retracted within the holder in the customary manner until it is desired to apply the lipstick.
Figs. 9 and 10 illustrate another form of holder cup embodying the features of the invention. In this embodiment the holder cup is formed of resilient spring steel or other suitable material shaped to form a cup of variable diameter having overlapping portions 3| and 32. A top flange 33 is provided to serve the functions described in connection with the top flangeZl of holder cup 20. Similarly to holder cup 20, holder cup 30 is provided with an annular, radially outwardly extending protuberance 3 intermediate the top flange 33 and the bottom of the cup 30 which protuberance cooperates with the annular groove l8 of carrier cup E6 in a manner similar to that described above in connection with the holder cup 20 of split or slotted construction. The inner diameter of holder cup 3|) may be increased by separating overlapping portions 3| and 32 to accommodate lipsticks of increased diameter and may be diminished by compressing or further overlapping portions 3| and 32 to accommodate lipsticks of smaller diameter. Insertion and removal of holder cup 30 from carrier cup I6 is accomplished in a similar manner to that described above in connection with holder cup 20.
While the drawings illustrate the invention as being embodied in a lipstick holder of the rotary or swivel type, it is obvious that the invention is adaptable to other types of holders such as the common push type of holder. Also, the drawings illustrate carrier cup l6 and holder cups 20 and 39 of being of circular cross-section to accommodate and retain cylindrical lipsticks. It is observed that the carrier cup and holder cup could be modified to have square, triangular or other cross-sections depending upon the cross-section of the particular lipstick to be retained within the holder.
Since certain additional modifications may be made in the lipstick holder of my invention without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the foregoing description and shown in the accompanying drawing be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I claim:
