1 INVENToRf EARL. FEINBERG FIG. 3
` ATTORNEYS Patented Mar. 10, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Claims.
This invention relates to waistbands for gar ments and has as its object the production of a new and improved. anti-slip waistband.
It is well known in the clothing art that shirts tucked within trousers or blouses tucked under a skirt hike while being worn with the result that the free edges of the shirt or blouse often come up and fall `on the outside of the trousers or skirt. Among the prior attempts to solve this problem is the association of rubber or other anti-skid material with the waistband; This has not proved commercially successful because of the difficulties and costs involved in attaching the anti-skid portion to the other material of the waistband. I have solved this problem by forming the waist band of the usual front and rear portions. I make the rear portion of stiifening material of the type used in the making of prior art waistbands. Instead of making the front portion of a single piece of material as has been done in the pri-or art I form `the same of a multiple number of bands. At the present time I prefer to make said front portion of three bands-namely, an upper band, a central band and a lower band. The upper and lower bands are made of the same lining material used in the prior art in the making of waistbands. The central band is made of a piece of fabric which has attached thereto or formed as a constituent element thereof one or more rubber threads which serve as anti-skid treads. In instances where I use two bands the front portion consists of an upper band and a lower band. The upper band consists of a piece of webbing or other suitable material having woven therein or otherwise attached thereto one or more rubber threads which serve as anti-skid treads and the lower band consists of the same lining material used in the prior art making of waistbands. By splitting the front portion of the waistbands into a multiple number of bands I am enabled to produce the waistband very economically in continuous strips. done by first forming the front portion and attaching the same to the stiffener portion or by forming the front portion and simultaneously attaching the stiffener thereto.
In order to disclose my invention with the particularity required by law I have shown in the drawings which form a part hereof and shall now describe two of the many possible embodiments of my invention.
In said drawings Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a fragment of my novel waistband.
Fig. 2 is a perspective View of a pair of trousers having as a component element thereof the novel waistband shown in Fig. 1.
This may be Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a fragment of the trousers taken along the line 3--3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a similar View of a modification of said novel waistband.
Referring more particularly to the drawings wherein similar reference numerals denote similar parts, reference numeral I denotes the trousers as a unit which have as a component elenentl thereof the novel waistband 2 shown in alg.
The waistband 2 consists of a front portion 3 and a rear or stiffener portion 4.
The rear or stiffener portion 4 is made of the usual stiifening material used in the prior art for making the rear or stiffening portion of a waistband.
The front portion 3 consists of a top band 5, a central anti-slip band 6, and a bottom band l.
The top band 5 and bottom band 'I are made of the usual type of lining material used in the prior art for making waistbands.
The anti-slip band 6 is made of a base fabric il which has attached thereto one or more series of rubber treads 9. The treads 9 are of such thickness that their faces 2'I extend beyond the faces 28 and 29 of the top band 5 and the bottom band 'I.
The top band 5 is formed of a main body portion I0 which terminates at its upper end in a free or trouser attaching edge II and at its lower end I2 in an upturned flange I3. The lower end I2 of the top band 5 is attached to the upper end Ill of the anti-slip band 6 lby means of the lines of stitching I5 which extend through the body portion III and upturned iiange I3 of the top band 5, through the upper end I4 of the anti-slip band 6 and through the upper end of the stiifener 4.
The bottom band 'I is channel shaped in crosssection, encompasses the lower ends I6 and II of the anti-slip band E and stirfener 4, and is attached to said elements by means of the lines of stitching 20 which extend-through the arms I8 and I9 of said bottom band 1 and through said anti-slip band 6 and stiffener 4.
The novel waistband 2 is attached to the body member 2l of the trousers I in the manner well known in the art. In the embodiments here shown the free or upper end 22 of the stiiener is positioned beneath the turned over end 23 of the trouser body member 2I, the upper end II of the top band 5 is turned to form the flange 24 which contacts the face 25 of the turned over end 23 of the trouser body member 2| and the ensemble are connected by means of the line of stitching 26 which extends through the body 3 'portion lll and flange 24 of the top band 5. through the turned over end 23 of the trouser body member 2| and through the upper end 22 of the stiffener 4.
The modification 30 shown in Fig. 4 differs from that shown in Fig. 1 only in the fact that the former has three series of treads 9 whereas the latter has two such series.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and useful is:
1. A waistband for a garment consisting of a stiiener portion; a front portion consisting of an upper band, a central band having thereon at least one tread of anti-skid material, and a U-shaped bottom band encompassing the lower edges of said central band and stiiener portion; means attaching said upper band to said central band; and means attaching the U arms of said bottom band to said central band and to said stifiener portion.
2. A waistband for a garment consisting of a stiiener portion; a front portion consisting of an upper band, a central band having thereon at least one tread of anti-skid material, and a U-shaped bottom band encompassing the lower edges of said central band and stii'ener portion; means attaching said upper band to said central band and to said stiiener portion; and means attaching the U arms of said bottom band to said central band and to said stiffener portion.
3. In combination with a pair of trousers a waistband consisting 'of a stiffener portion; a front portion consisting of an upper band, a central band having thereon at least one tread of anti-skid material, and a U-shaped bottom band encompassing the lower edges of said central band and stiiener portion; means attaching said upper band to said central band; and means attaching the U arms of said bottom band to said central band and to said stiifener portion.
4. In combination with a pair of trousers a waistband consisting of a stiffener portion; a front portion consisting of an upper band, a central band having thereon at least one tread of anti-skid material, and a U-shaped bottom band encompassing the lower edges of said central band and stiffener portion; means attaching said upper band to said central band and to said stiffener portion; and means attaching the U arms of said bottom band to said central band and to said stiiener portion.
5. A waistband for a garment comprising a stiifener band and a facing band including upper, lower and central portions, the central portion having thereon at least one tread of anti-skid material, the upper and lower edges of the central portion being in superposed relationship to the adjacent edges of the upper and lower portions, the free edges of the facing band extending beyond the free edges of the stiiener band, means connecting the superposed edges of the central and upper portions, and means connecting the superposed edges of the central and lower portions, one of said means also securing the facing band to the stiiener band.
