This invention relates to a waist band.
The invention is more particularly concerned with an improved waist band structure for use with trousers or skirts and embodies certain novel features as will be hereinafter pointed out.
It has heretofore been the general practice to apply waist bands to trousers in such manner that the upper edge of the waist ban-d was substantially at the top of the trousers. In other words, in the application of the Waist bands, the trouser material was turned in a very short distance and the upper edge of the Waist band was in most instances stitched thereto.
in the more recent styling in trouser manufacture, the trouser material is turned in a substantial distance with the object in view of eliminating the heretofore present visible stitch within the trousers and close to the top thereof.
Notwithstanding the fact that the trouser material is turned in for a substantial distance, it is essential that the waist ban-d extend to the top I" the trousers in order to render same suiiiciently firm to prevent rolling thereof in use.
Such waist band structure has, however, presented a problem relative to the securement thereof to the trousers material without the use of the heretofore used objectionable visible seam edge to the top of the trousers.
it is accordingly a primary object of the invention to provide a Waist band structure for applieation to trousers whereby the lower edge of a relatively wide inwardly folded waist portion 0i the trousers may be concealed and secured to the Waist band and wherein the waist band further extends to the top of the trousers with the upper edge thereof disposed within the fold and secured thereto by invisible means.
A further and more specic object of the invention is to provide an improved waist band structure including a relatively heavy Canvas stiffening strip, whose upper edge is adapted to be disposed within the fold of a relatively wide inturned waist portion of a garment and which upper edge is provided with a heat sealing tape, and the Waist band further including means for concealing and securing the free edge of the inturned portion thereto.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent in the course of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is an inside elevational view of a portion of a strip of waist band material constructed in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the invention and being illustrated as of actual dimensions for use with trousers or skirts.
Figure 2 is a substantially enlarged transverse sectional view of the waist band as observed in the plane of line 2--2 on Figure l.
Figure 3 is a View corresponding. to Figure l but showing the improved Waist band applied to a trousers which is illustrated fragmentally only.
Figure 4 is a substantially enlarged transverse sectional view as observed in the plane of line 4--4 on Figure 3.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, I0 designates the improved waist band in its entirety and while only a fragmental portion of the waist band is shown, same will in practice be manufactured in long strips and carried on rolls for use.
The waist band I comprises a relatively wide canvas strip I I to the lower inner wall of which is applied a suitable fabric I2 whose lower edge is turned over the lower edge of the canvas strip as indicated at I 3 and the outer relatively narrow folded over portion I4, only, is stitched to the lower edge of the canvas strip as indicated at I 5.
An intermediate fabric strip I6 of substantial width has its lower portion supported on the upper portion of the fabric I2 and secured thereto as well as the canvas strip by stitching I'I.
The strip IS has the upper portion thereof normally free of the canvas strip and provides a gap I8 for a purpose to later appear.
A heat actuatable thermoplastic coated tape I9 is secured to the inner face of the upper edge portion of the canvas strip by stitching 20.
The above described novel waist band structure provides for ready application thereof to the waist portion of a trousers or skirt with a relatively wide facing of trousers or skirt material on the inside of the waist portion at the top thereof and with the canvas strip II extending to the top of said waist portion and secured thereto without the presently used visible line of stitching.
As will be noted from Figures 3 and 4, the waist band is applied by originally placing same on the back of the trouser material 2| and disposing the free edge of the later folded trousers portion 22 within the gap i8; with the materials thus disposed aline of stitching 24 is inserted through the strip I6, thetrousers portion 22 and the canvas strip II which may be readily accomplished by a sewing machine since the materials in this position are laid at.
The stitch 24 is indicated as of the straight away form but may be of the zig-zag form if desired in order to more effectively bind the Aedge of strip I6 to the trousers material.
In the second step of Waist band assembly,
the trousers material 2| is folded at 23 around the aligned edges of the canvas strip II and the tape I9 whereby the latter are concealed within the trousers material while the stifening canvas strip Il still extends to the top of the trousers waist portion.

The: striprfl'. is :preferably provided with friction means. I6"for-retaining a shirt tail within the trousers. Furthermore', the waist band structure generally may beof forms diierent from that disclosedV without departure from the invention =which resides particularly in the provision of the'fheat sealing tape` I9 at the upper edge' of the. waistband material.
Instead of employing separate fabric strips I2 and lgwapplicant may combine these two strips into fa single facing; functioning in the same-manner as strips I2" and I6, as heretofore outlined.A
While I have disclosed my invention in accor-dance with asingle vspeciic structural embodiment thereof, such is to be considered as illustrative on'lygand not restrictiva-the scope of the invention being defined in the subjoined claims.

1.
