2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed Jan. 24, 1945 IN VEN TOR. 1807/1 am-1e meso/v Patented June 8, 1948 WOMANS GARMENT Ruth Usher Garson, Montreal, Quebec, Canada Application January 24, 1945, Serial No. 574,240 In Canada October 12, 1944 1 Claim. 1
My invention relates generally to garments. More particularly my invention is directed toward an improved construction for womens garments.
Among the objects of my invention are to devise a garment of the character described that will be attractive in appearance and economical to manufacture; to speed up mass production in the manufacturing of the garments by reducing the quantity of material that would ordinarily be needed and saving considerable amount of time in the cutting and assembly of the same; to construct a garment of the character described that will provide a better fit to the person; and generally to provide a garment of the character described which shall represent a general improvement in the art. Other objects of my invention will become apparent from the description or will hereinafter be pointed out.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary front view of a garment constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention illustrating the same as applied to the person;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary rear view thereof;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary front view of the upper portion of the garment illustrated in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a rear view thereof.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, the garment illustrated is a womans undergarment comprising a brassiere H and made of a suitable material and suitably shaped to conform with the configuration of the body. A belt I2 is secured to the lower edge of the brassire and extends therebeyond on each edge thereof (see Figs. 3 and 4) and the free ends of the said belt l2 are provided with suitable fastening members 13 so that a snug fit around the bust will be provided. Shoulder straps M are secured to the upper portion of the brassiere and to the belt l2.
A panel I6 is secured to the belt 12 by means of a seam l and located below the brassiere I I and in the front portion thereof. This panel I8 is made of suitable material and has outwardly tapering edges which terminate in approximately vertical edges so that the lower portion of the panel is of the same width as a skirt or slip I! to which it is attached in the following manner: The upper front portion of the slip I1 is sewn at l8 to the lower edge of the panel 16 and the slip I1 2 may be made in the usual manner and is provided with an opening l9 and fastening means 29 which are located at one side of the slip or skirt.
It will therefore be seen from the above description that in accordance with my invention the garment is made with a minimum of parts and instead of having a set of shoulder straps for supporting the slip and another set of shoulder straps for supporting the brassiere a single set of shoulder straps is used. Furthermore it is noted that due to the fact that both the slip and brassiere are joined at the front by a common member [6 which may be considered the equivalent of a front portion of a waist band a better fit of the garment to the person is obtained and permitting more resiliency in movement to the person wearing such garment.
In the foregoing description the garment is described as used in combination of a slip and a bust support, but it is of course understood that the same features with slight modifications and ramifications may be used for a dress without departing from the essential features as hereinafter described and illustrated.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiments above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth, or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a garment, the combination of a brassire comprising breast supporting pockets having a common lower longitudinal edge, a belt permanently secured to the said lower longitudinal edge of said brassiere and having portions thereof extending for a distance capable of encircling the body of the wearer and to be fastened together, the free ends of said extending portions having cooperating fastening members to provide a snug fit around the bust, a panel comprising upper, lower and side edges and permanently secured at its upper edge to the said belt and depending therefrom, said panel having outwardly tapering 3 4 i g e$555K iiifll ir fini ifiiifi i r$11 211; REFERENCES CITED front portion of th upper d of th id slip The following references are of record in the being permanently attached to the lower edge of file 151118 P said panel, the said vertical edges of said panel 5 UNITED STATES PATENTS being spaced apart for a. dlstance substantially equal to the width of the said upper end of said Number Name Date slip, a slitted opening in said slip along one side 2,042,305 Goodman May 26, 1935 extending downwardly from the top thereof and. 2,056,025 Thomas Sept- 29, 1935 releasable fastening means for closing said slitted m g gg o enin p g RUTH USHER GARSON. 39 Bloom N0v.7,194
