Description

April 1, 1952 M. ALLISON 2,590,915
ADJUSTABLE BRASSIERE Filed Sept. 30, 1949 Ma ryL. 221 5012 Attorney Patented Apr. 1, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,590,915 ADJUSTABLE BRASSIERE Mary Louisa Allison, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Application September 30, 1949, Serial No. 118,959
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to undergarments and more particularly to brassieres and contemplates a garment which incorporates breast cups attached to a front waist band and a detachable rear band.
Broadly the invention comprises a garment which is particularly adapted for older women requiring a deeper brassiere which will not ride up and will coincide with breathing and which is adjustable. To obtain a deeper and more flexible breast cup, the front waist band is slightly dished out below each cup. The space betweeni the cups is reinforced by means of sewn pleats.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a flexible garment as set forth with several adjustable features.
A further object is to incorporate elastic inserts in the waist band to cope with the expansion of the chest when the wearer is breathmg.
Still another object is to form a slightly dished portion below each breast cup to give a deeper and more flexible cup.
With these and other objects in view that may appear while the description proceeds the invention consists in the novel arrangement of cooperating elements as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing forming part of this application and in which:
Fig. 1, is a front elevational view of the garment;
Fig. 2. is an elevational view of the detachable rear band showing an elastic insert, and
Fig. 3, is an elevational view of the front waist band showing the means for fastening to the rear band.
Referring more in detail to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views itwill be seen the invention consists of a brassiere having a pair of breast cups 5 sewn to a waist band 6 and shoulder straps 1 attached to each breast cup.
Each breast cup 5 is formed on the bias and to obtain a globular form a V-shaped portion of material is removed from each cup at 8 and the edges of said V are sewn together. To obtain additional room in each cup and to permit free movement by the wearer slightly dished portions 9 are formed below each cup in the upper edge of the front band. This form also adds spherical effect to the cups.
The central portion ID of the front band is corded for reinforcement and also as a means of keeping the said portion flat.
Each cup is joined by an adjustable strap II, as disclosed in my Canadian Patent No. 413,439, which permits the cups to be adjustable.
When worn with a low cut dress, this feature can easily be removed.
The waist band as may be seen in the accompanying drawing is made in two pieces. The front band is sewn to the breast cups and corresponds in width thereto or is very slightly longer. A pair of rows of fasteners Ii are sewn to each extremity thereof and engage with similar fasteners i2 on the ends of the rear band 13. An elastic insert [4 is sewn on the rear band to cope with the chest expansion when the wearer is breathing.
Fasteners [5 are sewn on the rear band to receive the extremity of the shoulder strap 1 which are adjustable as described in my Canadian Patent No. 413,439.
It is believed that the construction and advantages of the structure shown may be apparent from the foregoing paragraphs taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings without further detailed description.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been disclosed it is understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of cooperating parts may be resorted to within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Iclaim:
A brassiere comprising a waist band composed of front and rear bands united at their ends by separable fasteners, the front band having its upper edge at each side of its center of concave contour, breast cups having their lower edges fitted in the concave portions of the front band and sewn thereto, said cups having their adjoining lower edges overlapping at the center of the front band of said waist band, and a corded portion in the center of the front band of said waist band.
