Application June 22, 1949;? seriarN ;5100353?-* This invention relates to improvements: in garments, and-has particular reference tof the' provision of a body garment'such' as: a brassierew "The principal object of "myfinvention is the provision of a distinctive form of brassiere and to associate with the same a pair of elongated belt sections that extend about the back of the wearer and are capable of being detachably and resiliently retained below the breasts, but above the waist-line.
Another object of the invention is to employ in the bust enclosing pockets of the brassire, a central triangular shaped section that is reinforced with stays and that functions to prevent a sagging of the breast and due to the uplifting function 'of the same, will retain the bust in alignment with the middle of the arms of the wearer.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a garment of the character described that is particularly shaped to properly and comfortably fit the shoulders, the breasts and the upper torso of the wearer so as to give the max-- imum protection for the desired purpose of convenience and efiiciency, and to prevent the diaphragm portion of the torso from unduly protruding.
Another object of the invention is the provision of the elongated belt portions that can be arranged in front of the diaphragm to produce the designated degree of adjustability and at the same time an effective fastening of the belt portions in the front thereof.
A further object of the invention is the production of a garment of the character described that is simple in construction, economical to manufacture, strong, durable, and highly efficient and serviceable in use.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts through the same,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the garment viewed from the front thereof,
Fig. 2 is a similar illustration but viewed from the rear thereof,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a similar figure disclosing the brassire portion of the garment in operative position and illustrating to advantage the method of detachably securing one of the belt sections to the other in front of the diaphragm of the wearer, and
I Glaiima (Chi-:42),
i isa -'topplan view'- of the garment, and for tleee. purpose: :of clarity the shoulder: straps are-partlyfbroken aways The present garment is made of cloth material usually employed for this purpose and comprises, as illustrated to advantage in the accompanying drawing, a substantially triangular shaped central portion 5 that is equipped with angular seams 6 and I that are joined at their a-pex 9 and extend angularly downward and are then connected at their lower extremities by horizontal cross seam ID. The space between the seams can be utilized as pockets, if desired, in which stays 10' are inserted to strengthen 0r reinforce the front of the garment and to prevent the breasts from coming together.
Radiating from the central portion 5 are a pair of cloth portions l I and I2 that are of a cup-like configuration and serve to enclose the breasts of the wearer and to support the same so that they will protrude outwardly, even though normally inclined to sag, thus enhancing the appearance of the wearer. Suitable gatherings or darts are utilized to reinforce the cup-shaped portions and to give further fullness to the same. A narrow side section I3 is secured to the inner side of the portion ll, while a similar side section 14 is sewed to the inner'side of the portion l2. These side sections underlie the armpits when the garment is worn.
A previously stated it is the object of this invention to associate with the brassiere portion of the garment a pair of elongated belts for the recited purposes, and referring to these belt portions, the numeral [6 designates a substantially triangular shaped belt that is joined as at 11 to the side section l3, while the numeral l8 indicates a second belt or strap, of the same general configuration as the strap 15, which strap 18 is likewise secured as at H! to the side section I 4.
It is to be noted that the belt or strap [6 is made entirely of cloth and that eyes 20 are provided on its free end. The belt section l8, however, is made partially of cloth and has secured thereto as at 2|, a pair of elastic extensions 22 that are secured at their outer ends by vertical cross piece 23 that carries spaced hooks 24 adapted to be received in the eyes 20 when the belt sections are secured together. (See Fig. 2.) It is to be noted that the body encircling bands or belts l6 and [B are joined to side sections, for example as at I! to section [3, crossing at the back of the wearer andcontinuing with diaphragm 3 covering and supporting elements. By virtue of the elasticity provided in the belt section l8, the said sections l5 and I8 are readily adjustable relative to each other.
Conventional adjustable shoulder straps A and B, as disclosed to advantage in Figs. 1 and 2, provide ready means for securing the garment to the wearer and these straps complete the construction of the garment.
From the foregoing description considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be obvious that I have devised a most unique garment, whereby the various objects of the invention can be readily accomplished.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to the shape, size, material and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of 20 the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim. Having thus described my invention, I claim: A garment of the character described comprisinf, a central triangular portion equipped with .4 reinforcing stays, a pair of cup shaped breast covering portions secured to said central portion, side sections secured to outer side portions of the breast covering portions, the said side sections adapted to underlie the arm pits of the wearer, a pair of belt sections adapted to overlap at a point medially of their length and being secured to said side sections for partially enveloping the waist and diaphragm of the wearer, and a pair "of elastic extensions connected to said belt sections for detachable engagement therewith.
