Description

Patented Apr. 27,

Application May 20, 1942, Serial No. 443,726
scnimaictzz) This invention relates to brassieres'and more particularly to a brassiere adapted to support and shape the breasts to desired conformation.
.A primary object of the invention is to provide means by which support is afforded to the breasts by a self-conforming means serving to mould the breasts to desired contour, and in the provision of co-operating means by which a regfice I, the edge thereof being suitably reinforced by the binding 9. It is to be noted that the ulatable degree of uplifting support for the breasts is attained.
Another object of the invention is to provide means by which the garments may be effectively employed as a nursing brassire without necessity for the complexity of construction usually found in, prior nursing garments.
More particularly, the invention contemplates the provision of a brassiere having a body portion formed with substantially conical pockets terminating in-breast-openings, the material of the body P r ion surrounding said openings being disposed in overlapped position, with the overlapped portions secured together only at a position remote from the marginal edge of the opening wherebysaid edge of the opening may be distended to thereby enable the opening-to be enlarged under breast pressure without materially changing its shape. The invention also resides in the provision of means, including a foldable front flap portion, for enabling a selected degree of uplift to be obtained for the breast, whereby the combination of the distensible opening and regulatable amount of uplift for the breasts will provide means by which the brassiere may be adjusted to fit comfortably under varying conditions of wear.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof, Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a garment, constructed in accordance with the invention, with one of the flap portions folded downwardly; Fig. 2 is a view of the inner or rear faced the garment; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 8-3 of Fig. l, looking in the direction of the arrows.
The body portion of the garment is compose of the two main inner sections land 2, adapted to be detachably united at the rear, when the garment is in position of wear, by means of the hooks 3 secured at the end of the elastic webbing 4 on section 2, which are selectively engaged with one pair of the eyelets 5 on the tab portion 6 located at the end of the portion I. At the front of the garment, the sections I and 2 are attached together by the centrally located inverted V-section of elastic .webbing 1. Each of the sections I and 2 is formed with a breast oristrips carrying a plurality of eyelets 2|.
material of the body of the garment in which the orifice is produced is overlapped as indicated at I0 and II, said overlapping occurring below each orifice so that these overlapped portions are located between the orifice and the lower edge of the garment and are free of attachment to one another adjacent the orifice, or along adjacentthe marginal edges of the orifice, ex-.
pension of the orifices under breast pressure, without material change in shape of the orifices, is attained. a f
The sections l and 2 of the garment constitute, in the illustrative embodiment of the invention shown, inner sections, the same being normally covered by outer sections l3, each of said outer sections being cupped, as'seen in Fig. The upper flaps it, these flaps having their lower terminations located above the lower ends of the orifices 8 and having upper tapered portions provided with loops 16 of elastic webbing or the like to which are secured the fastening hooks ll.
Each of the body sections l and 2 is provided with a shoulder strap 18 having a terminal I9 located above the orifice 8, and a reinforcing strip 20 is stitched to the face of the section I or 2.to form, in effect, a substantial continuation of theshoulder strap, each of said reinforcing The hooks I! are adapted for selective engagement with any one of the eyelets 2| as required for securing the proper uplift for the breasts.
Through the arrangement disclosed, distension of the breast orifices is readily obtained without distortion'of the body of the garment, since the overlapped portionsof the garment around the breast openings enable the same to be distended as required for breast accommodation. Thus, by distension of-these orifices, lateral shaping or moulding of the breasts takes place. At the same time, a co-operative' uplifting action to any required extent is secured by regulation of the interengaging fastening elements I! and 2|,
which serve to raise or lower the flap sections ll as desired. 'For nursing purposes it will be obvious that the fiaps ll may be lowered as indicated at the right of Fig. 1, whenever required. Having described one embodiment of the'inventiqn, it is obvious that the same is not to be restricted thereto, but is broad enough to cover all structures coming within the scope of the annexed claims. a o I What we claim is:
1. In a brassiere, a body portion formed with a breast orifice, the material of the body portion having parts disposed in overlapped rela-- tion adjacent said orifice whereby said orifice is laterally distensible under breast accommodation, a cupped portion overlying the orifice and co-operative therewith in affording breast support, the upper part of the cupped portion consisting of a fiap capable of lowering movement to uncover at least a part of the orifice, and means at the upper end of said fiap for adjusting the extent of support afforded by the cupped portion, the lower part of the cupped portion being at all times disposed over and covering the overlapped parts of the body portion regardless of whether said flap is raised or lowered.
2. Ina brassire, a body portion formed with a breast orifice, the material of the body portion having parts disposed in overlapped relation adjacent said orifice whereby said orifice is laterally distensible under breast accommodation, a cupped portion overlying the orifice and co-operative therewith in afiording breast support, the upper part only of the cupped portion consisting of a fiap capable of lowering movement to uncover at least a part of the orifice, the lower part of the cupped portion consisting a fixed panel extending over and covering the overlapped parts of the body portion, and means at the upper end of said flap for adjusting the extent of support aflorded by the cupped portion, said means consisting of a fastening element carried by the upper end of the fiap and selectively engageable with any one of several complementary fastening elements carried by the body portion above the orifice.
3. In a brassiere, a body portion formedwith a breast orifice, the material of the body portion having parts disposed in overlapped relation adjacent said orifice whereby said orifice is expansible as to size, a cupped member extending over the outer face of the body portion and covering the orifice, said cupped member having a free upper portion capable of being downwardly folded to uncover at least a portion or the orifice, said free upper portion having a tapering up-' per end carrying a securing element, said cupped member also including a fixed lower part extending over and covering the overlapped parts of the body portion, a shoulder strap having one end attached to the body portion above the orifice, a reinforcing strip secured to the body portion above the orifice and forming a continuation-oi the shoulder strap, and several iastening elements on said reinforcing strip for selective engagement with the securing element on the cupped member to thereby regulate the extent of uplift provided by said securing member.
4. In a brassiere, the combination of a body portion formed with a breast orifice. the material of the body portion surrounding the orifice being overlapped at a point below the orifice. a seam extending along the lower edge of the body portion and confining the lower edge portions of the overlapped parts within it, said overlapped parts being free of one another between said seam and the orifice whereby said parts may be regulatably overlapped to the required extent to cause the orifice to accommodate itself to breast size and shape, and a cupped cover member extending over and covering the orifice and having a part capable of downfold to expose the orifice, said foldable part having its line of fold disposed above theoverlapped parts of the body portion.
5. In a brassire, the combination of a body portion provided with a breast orifice, the material of the body portion surrounding the breast orifice having overlapped ends at a point below the orifice, a seam extending along the body portion below the orifice and spaced therefrom, said seam acting to secure together the overlapped ends only at a position remote from the orifice whereby the orifice may be enlarged under breast pressure, the free overlapped parts being located between the breast orifice and the seam, a cupped cover member extending over and covering the orifice, said cover member having a flap portion gagement by the fastener element carried by the elastic member.
