Description

I FM, 1943. R A ON 2,310,855
GARMENT Filed April 15,' 1941 INVENTOR #036 v r r V mMmwrT ATTORNEYS improved garment such-as I combination garment or the like, which is proand a brassiere con- 1 Patented Feb. 9, 1943 UNITED STATES PATENT format I (2,310,855- Annex: K 1 1 2 5 388,606 20laims. (or. 2-13) This invention relates to an improved garment, particularly a woman's garment.
It is an object of the invention to provide an a'slip, bathing suit,
vided with a body portion nected thereto by an elastic midrifl. so formed that the brassiere will support the hosts and hold them firmly in position.
A further object is the provision of an improved garment of the above character which is inherently adjustable to various sizes and which supports the diaphragm of the wearer as well as the-busts.
Another object is the provision of an improved garment having a skirt portion which will not hike or creep upwardly, which will not burst at the sides of the hip portion, and which will cling to the body without getting out of shape.
In the accompanying drawing- Fig. l is a perspective view from the front of a garment embodying my invention showing it applied to a wearer;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view from the rear of the garment, also showing it applied to a wearer; and
Figs. 3 and 4 are front and rear views respectively of the garment.
My invention is applicable to various types of garments such as slips, bathing suits, combination garments and the like. In theaccompanying drawing it is illustrated as applied to aslip comprising a skirt portion 5, a brassire portion 6, and a midriff portion ll disposed between the hrassiere and skirt portion.
The brassiere portion is formed of a pair of breast pockets 8 made of inelastic material and formed in the usual manner to accommodate the busts of the wearer. The breast pockets may be integral, or are suitably attached together at their adjoining edges, while the outer edges are attached to extensions or anels 9, also made of inelastic material and extending around the sides of the garment to the rear thereof. The ends of the panels 9 are spaced apart at the rear of the garment and are preferably curved as shown at it.
The lower edges of the panels 9 and the breast pockets 8 are preferably formed in a continuous line in the manner shown, which extends upwardly in a peak or point between the two breast pockets as illustrated at i i.
The midrifl portion 1 is made of one-way stretch elastic material such as the midriif Lastex, which is arrangedto stretch in a horizontal or lateral direction, but not in a vertical direction. At the front of the garment the midi-in portion is secured to the lower edges of the breast pockets by stitching, and also to the lower edges of the panels 9. In this connection the upper edge of portion should conform in shape to the lower edge of the breast pockets and panels. extending upwardly in a peak or point at the center of the front of the garment.
At the rear of the garment the midrifl portion issecured to the lower edges or the-panels 9 conforming to the shape thereof, and extends upwardly between the .two ends of the panels as indicated at l2. Accordingly, at the center of the rear of the garment the elastic material I! extends to the top of the garment and forms the upper edge thereof, permitting the circumference of the garment at this point to expand whereby the garment is inherently adjustable to various sizes.
The midrifi portion may be formed of one or more separate pieces secured together by stitching. In the accompanying drawing it is illustrated as being comprised of front and rear panels secured together at the side edges as by means of stitching M.
Due to the fact that the entire midrifl portion stretches laterally, it cl gs to the wearer and provides support for the brassire portion of the garment and helps in holding the busts firmly in position. It will also be appreciated that the midriif portion serves to support the diaphragm of the wearer. Because the midriif portion will not stretch in a vertical direction, the garment will hang properly on all sides thereof.
The skirt is so cut that at the seam at the center 01 the rear of the garment, the weave is parallel to the vertical and transverse axes of the garment. At the front of the garment, ho ever, the weave is disposed on the bias. From the center or the rear of the garment to the center oi the front of the garment, the amount of bias progressively increases as indicated by the arrows, until the bias assumes an angle of approximately 45 near the center of the front. When the skirt is cut in this fashion, it will not creep or hike upwardly and it clings to the body without becoming permanently distorted. Due to the fact that the the rear of the thereof, the shirt the hip portion.
It will thus be seen that I have provided an improved garment which is inherently adjustable to various sizes, and which is provided with an integral brassiere portion which is so formed and is so connected to the body portion of the garment as to support the busts of the wearer and hold them firmly in position. I have also provided an improved garment such as'a slip having a skirt portion which will nothike or creep upwardly, which will cling to the wearer without becoming permanently distorted, and which will not burst at the sides of the hip portion.
It should be understood that modifications may bemade in the illustrated and described embodiment 0! my invention and that the invention is seam is disposed at the center of skirt rather than at the side edges will not burst at the sides of applicable to bathing suits, combination garments and the like, as well as to slips.
I claim:
1. A garment comprising a body portion made of inelastic material. a brassiere portion coinprising breast pockets made or inelastic material, and having extensions made oi inelastic material attached to the side edges thereof and extending to the rear of the garment, the ends of theextensions being spaced apart at the rear of the garment, and a midrii! portion connected between the upper edge or the skirt and the lower edge 0! the brassiere portion and extending upwardly to the top of the garment adjacent the center or the rear thereof, the said midrifl! portion being made of elastic material.
2. A garment as set forth in claim 1 in which the elastic material stretches in a lateral direction only.
