Description
June 14, 1949. SCHWALBE I 2,473,393
LADY S SLIP Filed March 12, 1947 IN VEN TOR. E A H, SCHWALBE Patented June 14, 1949 UNITED I STATES PATENT OFFICE LADYS SLIP Emma H. Schwalbe, New York, N. Y.
Application March 12, 1947, Serial No. 734,029 1 Claim. 01. 2-73) This invention relates to ladies slips and to the method of making the same.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a ladys slip which has only one skirt seam which is located at the rear of the skirt portion, instead of two or more seams which are usually located at opposite sides of the slip.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a slip which requires less sewing to assemble the same, less effort to cut out the pieces, a lesser number of pieces to cut, and thus is less expensive to make.
According to the present invention, the bottom or skirt portion of the slip is cut in one piece and sewed together at the center back, and the front and sides of the skirt portion of the slip are plain and Without any seams whatsoever. The upper portion of the slip will have the usual lace, bust enveloping panel or encompasser, back panel and a bust supporting panel. These parts are cut out and then assembled in the usual manner by stitching; but the skirt portion is stitched only at the center back.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational View of the slip according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevational view.
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the slip.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the front skirt portion with the rear skirt edges and seam shown in dot and dash lines.
Fig. 5 is a lay-out view of the bust enveloping panel.
Fig. 6 is a similar view of the back panel.
Fig. '7 is a similar view of the bust supporting panel.
Referring now to the figures, It represents a ladys slip formed, accordingto the present invention, from a skirt portion ll, bust encompassing panel 12, a back panel l3 and a bust supporting panel M. The skirt portion is made from one piece so that when it is sewed together, there will appear only one seam I5 which will lie in the center back or rear. The upper front edge of the skirt portion is shaped like an inverted V, an edge of which is indicated at l6; while the upper rear edge of the same is V-shaped with the arms of the rear V commencing at the same point as the arms of the front inverted V thus producing a shape like a diamond which has been pulled sidewise and so forming a diamond with two acute side angles and two obtuse. top and bottom angles. After the skirt piece is sewed together, the back panel l3 will be sewed onto the top of the back skirt portion. The bottom of this back panel i3 is provided with depending V- shaped bottom edges I! for accommodating the shorter length of the skirt portion in the rear.
To the vertically extending side ends of the back panel, there is sewed the bust encompassing piece or panel [2 along with the bust supporting piece M under it. This stitching is the only stitching which will appear on the sides of the slip and is as indicated at IS. The bust supporting panel is sewed as indicated at l9 to the bottom edge of the bust enveloping panel, and the bust supporting panel is sewed to the top front edge N5 of the skirt portion II. The usual shoulder straps 2! and upper and lower lace pieces 22 and 23 can thereafter be attached to the garment. The upper lace piece 22 has two side seams in the customary manner but the lower lace piece 23 has only one seam, which is located directly under the skirt seam l5. It will thus be seen that there has been provided a garment without a plurality of seams in the skirt portion or along the sides of the skirt.
It is to be understood that the skirt part of the garment may be out either on the straight or on the bias of the material, however, a bias cut is preferable so as to provide a better fit by conforming to the figure of the wearer. This invention may also be applied to nightgowns or other similar garments.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
A form fitting slip comprising a skirt, a bust supporting panel, a bust encompassing panel and a back panel, said skirt being formed of a single piece of material and having a single vertically extending seam securing the side edges of said material together at the back of said skirt, said seam extending from the lower edge of said skirt to the upper edge thereof, said upper edge on each side of said vertical seam being curved,
edge of said skirt, said bust encompassing panelextending across the front of said slip from each side thereof, said bust encompassing paneli-having a curved lower edge of an inverted V-shaPQ- with the apex thereof disposed substantiallyon" the vertical center line of saidbustencompassin panel, said bust encompassing panel having apair:
of oppositely disposed, side edges diverging upwardly from said bottom edge and an upper edge ceonverging v upwardly and inward-1y from 1ea'ch of =z-seid side-edges andr then' downwardly, :j un'ctioning :on said verticalscenter linepsaidlowenwedge of said bust encompassing panel complementing and being secured to the upper edge of said bust supporting panel, said back panel extending from side to side across the back of said slip and havingits side edges secured to the side edges of said bust supporting and bust encompassing panels, said back panel having a substantially straight line upper edge, the lower edge thereof being c-substanti llyp dacompl m n in th pp r 10 edge of ,asaidzskirt at ith'eiback thereof and being secured thereto.
