LADYS SLIP Filed Oct. 24, 1952 k/zwwmm ,4 rromvs Y5 United States Patent LADYS SLIP Paula Blatt, Cleveland, Ohio Application October 24, 1952, Serial No. 316,751
1 Claim. (Cl. 2-73) This invention relates to the general class of womens under-garments and is for an improved slip.
One object of my present invention is to devise a slip in which the breast region thereof is adapted to accommodate itself to the natural enlargement of the breasts during the period of pregnancy so as to afford a sense of comfort to the wearer and also to maintain a satisfactory fit of the slip about the upper part of the body.
With my present invention this may be accomplished by means of a slip that is of comparatively simple construction and hence may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable price; and this constitutes another object of my present invention.
Still further objects will appear from the following description and claim when considered together with the accompanying drawing.
Fig. 1 illustrates the one-piece blank of material from which my present slip may be made; and
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the finished slip.
It is to be understood that the present form of disclosure is merely for the purpose of illustration and that there might be devised various modifications thereof without departing from the spirit of my invention as herein set forth and claimed.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing in detail, my present slip may be made from a single one-piece blank 1 of suitable material with a single seam 2 at the rear extending the full height thereof. The single blank body 1 is so formed, as indicated in Fig. 1 of the present drawing, that it may be gathered vertically in the upper part thereof beneath and inwardly of each arm pit, the gathered portions 3 extending from the upper end of the body 1 to points that are short of the waist line of the garment. The purpose of these gathered portions 3 is to provide suitable fulness at the outer parts of the breast region, as will more fully appear from the following description; and, with this in mind, the blank as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing has the upwardly extending portions 1a upon the inner side of the slits 1b preparatory to forming the gathered portions 3 and the accompanying fulness upon the inner or breast side thereof.
There is provided an elastic tape 4 that is gathered horizontally about the rear part of the Waist line and continues in such gathered condition about the sides in a horizontal manner forwardly to points in the waist line approximately below the centers of the breasts of the wearer, the elastic 4 extending in a horizontal direction and about the waist line throughout its entire extent.
At the upper end portion of the body 1 of the slip and in the middle front part thereof, I have provided also another gathered elastic tape 5 that extends vertically downwardly from the top of the garment and terminates at its lower end at a point approximately between the centers of the breasts of the wearer.
The gathered elastics 4 and 5 will automatically yield in a resilient manner so as to render the garment selfaccommodating in accordance with the increased fulness that may be required by the natural development of the breast region of the wearer during the period of expectancy; and the particular location and extent of the gathered elastics 4 and 5, in coordination with the gathered portion 3, will co-operate in producing this desired result and will thereby afford the highest possible sense of comfort upon the part of the wearer at all times during her pregnancy. That is to say, all of these gathered portions together provide what may be regarded as selfaccommodating pockets that are defined by the gathered portions 3 at the outer parts thereof, by the elastic gathered portions 4 at the lower sides thereof and by the elastic gathered portions 5 at the inner sides thereof. With a permanent fulness afforded by the gathered portions 3, the combined effect of the vertically extensible gathered portion 5 and the horizontally extensible gathered portions 4 will be to afford the necessary enlargement of each of these pockets in virtually all directions in a self-accommodating manner.
Thus I have devised a slip that is not only of a comparatively simple form of construction and hence capable of being manufactured and sold within a very reasonable price range but that is capable of affording to the wearer during all stages of expectancy a satisfactory fitting of the garment and a decided feeling of comfort.
What I claim is:
A ladys slip consisting of a body of suitable material gathered vertically in the upper part thereof at each side corresponding to the arm pits of the wearers body and stopping short of the waist line of the slip, an elastic tape gathered throughout the entire rear part of the waist line of the slip and continuing forwardly about the sides thereof and terminating at points at the front approximately below the centers of the breast regions of the slip, and an elastic tape gathered vertically in the top middle front part of the slip downwardly to a point approximately midway between the centers of the breast regions of the slip, whereby there may be afforded suitable resilient yieldability for suitable fulness to accommodate enlargement of the wearers body in the region of her breasts.
