FUEL VAPORIZING APPARATUS FOR AN AFTERBURNER Filed Nov. 18, 1949 Patented Dec. 23, 1952 FUEL VAPORIZING APPARATUS FOR AN AFTERBURNER John Stanley Clarke, Burnley, and Eric Samuel Collinson, Higher Brunshaw, Burnley, England, assignors to Joseph Lucas Limited, Birmingham, England Application November 18, 1949, Serial No. 128,188 In Great Britain November 26, 1948 2 Claims.
In some internal combustion prime movers, provision is made for supplementing the heat energy of the motive fluid (after it has performed some amount of mechanical work) by the combustion therein of additional liquid fuel, and so enabling additional work to be performed.
The object of the present invention is to provide improved means for vaporising the supplementary fuel by the heat of the ambient hot gases.
The accompanying drawing is a sectional side elevation of a supplementary fuel vaporiser in accordance with the invention.
Referring to the drawing or represents a substantially cylindrical conduit along which the hot gases, to be boosted by the combustion therein of supplementary fuel, flow in the direction indicated by the arrows. By means of a plurality of radial arms I) (for example three) there is supported on the axis of the conduit a hollow vaporising chamber 0. One of these arms is hollow and is adapted to convey liquid fuel to the part c from an inlet connection d.
The chamber is of substantially cylindrical form and communicates near its upstream end with the hollow arm 1;. Within the chamber are arranged parallel with each other a plurality of hot gas tubes g which are supported at their ends by the end plate h, and a plate 2' situated near the down-stream end of the chamber 0, this end being closed by a perforated plate If desired the plate 7 may be solid in which case perforations k are provided in the adjacent circumferential part of the chamber 0. Alternatively these perforations and a perforated end. plate 9' may be provided. Further perforations may be provided in the plate h to admit hot gases into the regions surrounding the tubes g.
Also perforations m are provided in the chamber 0 between the plates h, z and around them are provided a pair of rings 11 forming an annular discharge nozzle for the vapour. The vapour issuing from the nozzle is ignited by the ambient hot gases which usually contain sufficient free oxygen to support combustion, but, if desired, any convenient provision may be made for admitting additional air to the region around the nozzle.
Hot gases flowing through the tubes g serve to vaporise the liquid fuel in the chamber 0.
For shielding the stream of vapour issuing through the nozzle, and therebyobviating excessive dispersion of the vapour by the gas stream 2 before the vapour is ignited, a baflle ,f is provided. If desired there may also be provided an additional bafile o. Ignition of the vapour occurs in the region protected by the bafiies.
By this invention the vaporising of supplementary liquid fuel for the purpose above mentioned can be efiected in a very simple and satisfactory manner.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A supplementary vaporiser comprising in combination a substantially cylindrical vaporising chamber provided with peripheral vapour outlets, means for supporting said chamber in a hot gas stream and for conveying liquid fuel to said chamber, a bafile on said chamber for shielding vapour issuing from said vapour outlets, and gas tubes arranged longitudinally in said chamber, said tubes being open to the exterior of said chamber at one end thereof, and said chamber being provided at its other end with gas outlets which are spaced from said vapour outlets, and which communicate with the adjacent ends of said tubes.
2. A supplementary vaporiser as claimed in claim 1 and having an additional bafile arranged on said chamber between said vapour outlets and said gas outlets to provide between it and the other bafile a region for ignition of vapour issuing from said vapour outlets.
