Abstract

1427540 Gas turbine engine combustion equipment SOC NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION 14 June 1973 [23 June 1972] 28308/73 Heading F1L [Also in Division F4] The invention relates to combustion apparatus of the vaporizing type for an engine such as a gas turbine engine, the invention being described with reference to a combustion apparatus comprising an outer annular casing in which is disposed an annular flame tube, a series of fuel vaporizing devices projecting into the flame tube. Each vaporizing device is of hollow T-form and comprises a hollow body portion 112 having a pair of transverse hollow arms 113X, 114X each arm terminating in an outlet portion 113Y, 114Y directed upstream parallel to the body portion. The upstream end 112X of the body portion is open for inflow of air under pressure A 1 and a fuel injection device 117 projects into the body portion for supply of fuel as indicated at C, the fuel being vaporized and a mixture of vaporized fuel and air A.C. discharging from the outlet portions 113Y, 114Y. A wall T is disposed around the body portion 112 and the arms 113X, 114X also around the outlet portions 113Y, 114Y so as to define a passage K2 through which a fraction of air A 2 flows. Openings 126 are formed in the wall T in the region of the arms and a fraction of the air discharges through the openings. Also a series of fins or vanes 125 are disposed in the passage K2 in the region of the arms 113X, 114X to assist heat transfer. A further hollow member 118 is disposed around the wall T, in the region of the inlet portion and defines therewith a passage 119 for a flow of cooling air a which discharges through outlet 119Y. The object of the invention is to prevent overheating of the vaporizer should the flow of fuel from the injector 117 be reduced or cease.
