ALFRED L. SEABURY, OF NORFOLK, VIRGINIA.
BLACKlNG-BRUSH CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,815, dated May 30, 1882,
Application filed November 17, 1881. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, ALFRED L. SEABURY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful' Improvements in Blacking-Brush Gases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a partofthis specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention put up for sale or packed away when not in use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view with the lower portion of my incasing-box removed, and disclosing the brush for polishing. The lid or cover of the upper partof my incasing-box is here open, showing daubing-brush and box of blacking with holder packed away therein. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the brush, with the lid or cover of the first part of my case closed, and the lower part removed, as ready for use.
My object in this invention is to secure a cheap, useful, and convenient arrangement for incasing a polishing-brush, daubing-brush, and box of blacking with holder. Some efforts have been made in this direction before. Many of these curtail the size of the polishing-brush and detract from its usefulness to make room either for a daubing-brush or box of blacking. Mine does not do this. Some depend upon the peculiar construction of the back of the polishing-brush with cavities, grooves, 850. I do not claim these, or any peculiar construction of the brush. bome have an entirely detached box to put the brush and all the articles in. The principal part of my case is firmly fixed to the polishing-brush, and is always with it, and serves the double purpose of keeping with it all the articles used, and also of improving the hand-hold on the brush when being used in polishing.
My aim has been to combine simplicity, neatness, cheapness, and strength, and to produce not only a neat but usable and salable affair; and my invention is carried out in detail by fixing the brush permanently in the upper part of the case, leaving room so as to form a receptacle for the dauber and blacking-brush, 850., and in fitting the lower part of the case to the upper so as to incase the bristle part of the brush, thus forming a complete case.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A denotes the blacking-brush, which is secured in any convenient way to and in the band or central part, c, of the casing G. This is preferably made of sheet metal. Its upper edge extends some way above the top of the brushback, so as to give ample space to place herein a dauber, and a box of blacking, E, with its holder F. To this part c is attached in any desired way the cover or lid 0. The lower part, c, of the casing, which has a close bottom, may be placed over the bristles of the blanking-brush A, and attached to the central band, 0, in any usual way, so as to be detachable, and thus will form the lower part of the box. The construction of the upper part of the case may be changed in many ways without affecting the essential aim of this inventionnamely, by having lid 0 fit fast on c, and a drawer slide in on the back of t..e brush through the sides or ends ofc, and in many other ways. 1
In using the brush A in polishing, the parts 0 c of the casing G will afford a very firm and easy hand-hold. The lower part, c, of the case will not only protect the bristles from any harm when the device is packed up, but will prevent their soiling anything.
Having thus described myinvention, whatI consider new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An entire incasing-box of metal or other material, consisting of an upper and a lower part, with a brush fitted and fixed in the said upper part, so as to leave space therein for daubing-brush and hlacking, and the lower part fitting over the brush and the sides of the upper part of the incasing-box, so that when the lower part of the box is removed the brush is ready for use.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALFRED L., SEABURY.
