ApplicationFebruary 9, 194e, Serial No. 75,423 1Claim. (ems-1st) This invention relates to a mixer cap for mounting on a Venturi tube associated with gas burners.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved cap designed to be mounted on the inner end of a Venturi tube having an air inlet opening in the side thereof, the cap having an opening adapted in one position of the cap to register with the Venturi opening, and adapted upon rotation of the cap to be moved at least partially out of registry with the Venturi opening to thereby finely regulate the entrance of air into the Venturi.
Another object of this invention is to provide a mixer cap having diametrically opposed air inlet openings which admit air into the inner end of the Venturi from opposed sides, thereby providing a more thorough mixture of the air with the gas, and permitting the maximum mixture of air with the gas to obtain the most eificient combustion.
With the above and other objects in View, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawings and specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral I5 designates generally a Venturi tube which is associated with a conventional gas burner l6 and with a gas discharge nozzle H. The nozzle H extends into the intake end or head I8 of the venturi l5 and the head I8 is formed with a pair of diametrically opposed air intake openings I9.
In order to provide a means whereby the admission of air into the head 18 of the Venturi may beclosely regulated to -provide for maximum efiiciency. in the burning of the gas, I have provided. a mixer cap generally designated as 2i).
The cap 20 is formedof a cylindrical wall 2 i which loosely engages about the head l8, and the wall 2| is formed with a pair of openings 22 which are diametrically opposed, and are adapted to be moved into or partially out of registry with the openings l9intheheadl8.
The cap 20 also includes an inner. end wall 23 having an annular flange 24 .throughwhich-the gas discharge nozzle I I is adapted to be loosely extended. The flange 24 provides for holding the nozzle I! centrally of the head H3. The cylindrical wall 2| of the cap 20 is provided with an elongated slot 25 through which a securing member 26 is adapted to be extended, the latter being threaded into the head I8 so that the cap 20 may be firmly secured in circumferentially adjusted position with respect to the head l8. As shown in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive, the cap 2% is split at its rear portion, being formed with opposed pairs of fingers or extensions 2? so that the cylindrical wall 2| may be slightly contracted or expanded if necessary to provide for the proper engagement of the cap 20 on the head !8.
Referring now to Figures 5 and 6, there is disclosed a modified form of mixer cap generally designated as 28. The cap 28 is formed of a cylindrical wall 29 having an inner end wall 3% integral therewith, and an annular flange 3! is provided for centrally holding the gas discharge nozzle. The cylindrical wall 29 is provided with a pair of diametrically opposed air intake openings 32 and the wall 29 is also formed with an elongated slot 33 for receiving a screw or fastening means to lock the cap against rotation on the Venturi head. The cap 28 difierentiates from the cap 20 by omitting the split outer portion of the cylindrical wall 29.
Referring now to Figures 7, 8 and 9, there is disclosed another modified form of mixer cap generally designated as 34. The cap 34 is formed of cylindrical wall 35 having an inner end wall 36 and a flange 31 through which the gas discharge nozzle 38 is adapted to be loosely extended. The cylindrical wall 35 is split at its outer portion and pairs of opposed fingers 39 are provided at the split portion of the wall 35. An arcuate flange 40 is fixedly carried by the outer end of the wall 35 being mounted at right angles to the wall 35 and adapted to be disposed closely adjacent a bracket arm 4! having a base i2 which is welded or otherwise firmly secured to the venturi 43.
A headed screw 44 is threaded through the arm 3 4| and the head of the screw 44 is adapted to bear against the flange 40 so that the cap 34 will be held in its circumferentially adjusted position with respect to the head of the Venturi.
The form of invention shown in Figure 10 is similar in every detail to that shown in Figures 7, 8 and 9, with the exception that the cylindrical wall 45 is not provided with a split outer portion. The cylindrical wall 45 has fixed thereto a right angularly disposed and longitudinally curved flange 46 which is similar to the flange 40. v
In the use of this cap structure, the cap 20 is slipped over the inner end of the head 18, and preferably the locking screw 26 which is extended through the slot 25 is disposed on the upper side of the head l8. This position of the screw 26 will permit the easy and quick adjustment of the cap 20 about the head 3. When it is desired to adjust the cap 20, the screw 26 is loosened slightly and the cap 20 then turned clockwise to at least partially move the openings 22 of the cap 20 out of complete registry with the intake openings l9 of the head 18. When the cap 20 has been properly and accurately adjusted to provide for most eflicient burning of the gas, the cap is locked in its adjusted position by tightening of screw 26. By providing the cap 20 and the cap 34 with a split wall, the cap can be slightly spread or contracted to provide for engagement with Venturi heads which may not be of the exact interior diameter of the cap 20.
I do not mean to confine myself to the exact details of construction herein disclosed, but claim all variations falling within the purview of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
A mixing device for air and gas comprising in combination a Venturi tube having an open end and opposed air intake openings in the wall thereof adjacent said end, a regulating cap comprising a cylindrical body having an open end and a closed end having an aperture therein, and a gas inlet projecting through said aperture, said body being rotatable on said tubular member and having a pair of opposed air intake openings and a pair of split portions, each forming a slot lengthwise of said cap and extending from each of said openings to the inner open end of said cap, said body also having an elongated circumferentially extending slot outwardly of said openings and between said split portions.
