UNITED STATES JOHN '1. GRIFFIN, 0F BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
FLOW-REGULATING DEVICE FOR GAS-BURNERS.
Application filed February 24, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JorrN T. GRIFFIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore City and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Flow-Regulating Device for Gas-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a new and useful device for controlling the volume of gas supplied to a gas burner.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a regulating device for gas burners which will be capable of ready adjustment, and by means of which the volume of gas supplied to a burner may be increased or diminished at will, to maintain the proper proportions of air and gas, irrespective of the pressure in the gas supply main. A further object is to provide a device of the char acter mentioned, having a regulator tube capable of being connected with any standard burner cock, and having an adjustable discharge orifice. A further object is to provide a stop device mounted 011 the regulator tube, for maintaining the said tube in any adjusted position with respect to the burner cock, said device permitting of adjustments of the position. of the tube to conform to various types of gas burners. A further object is to provide a control means for the regulator tube, the same being adjustably mounted on the stop device, and having means cooperating with the burner, to determine the burner position.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating a regulating device constructed in accordance with the invention, in operative position with respect to a gas burner. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the burner cock with the regulating device attached thereto, the latter being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a sectional view illustrating a slight modification.
Referring to the drawing 10 designates a gas burner of the type commonly employer on gas ranges. It is to be understood however, that this type of burner has been selected solely for illustrative purposes, and that the invention may be applied to any other type of gas burner. The burner cock Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 447,603.
11 is of standard construction, provided with a threaded nipple 12, by means of which it may be attached to the gas manifold, and also provided with the usual valveoperating handle 13. At the present time, the manufacturers of gas appliances in the United States have adopted a uniform standard for the style and dimensions of the burner cock, and the drawing conventionally illgstrates a device conforming to said standar Extending from the burner cock in a direction opposite to that of nipple 12, is a discharge tube 14, provided with an annular shoulder 15, against which the end of the burner normally abuts, thereby determining the burner position with respect to the cook. it is to be understood that the shoulder 15 is a part of the standard construction of the burner cook, but performs no function when the present invention is attached to the latter. Said discharge tube 14 is internally threaded, to receive an exteriorly threaded regulator tube 16, the outer end of which is provided with a discharge orifice 17, and slits 18 leading therefrom, the corn struction being such as to provide a variable discharge orifice. Adjustably mounted upon the tube 16 is a lock nut 19, which bears against the outer end of the tube 14, and locks the tube 16 against rotation. It is obvious from the drawing, that the distance which the tube 16 protrudes from the tube 1 1 may be varied, by first loosening the lock nut 19, and then screwing the tube inwardly or outwardly as circumstances may require. The lock nut is provided with suitable means whereby it may be engaged by a tool, for convenient rotation, such as the recesses 19.
Adjustably mounted 011 the lock nut 19 is a regulating sleeve 20, internally threaded to engage the threads of said nut. Said regulating sleeve is provided with a projection at its outer end having a discharge orifice 21, and a conical recess 22 contiguous to the latter. Said recess is positioned to engage the split end of the tube 16, for the purpose of compressing said end to reduce the size of the discharge orifice 17. Said sleeve is provided with an annular shoulder 23, which is employed in. lieu of the shoulder 15 of the burner-cock, to engage the burner, for the purpose of determining the burner position. The sleeve 20 is also provided it may be conveniently rotated for adjustments upon the lock nut 19.
In lieu of the split sleeve 16, the construction illustrated in Fig. 3' may be employed. In this form of the invention, the externally threaded regulator tube 16 is employed, the same being closed at its outer end by a tapered valve-like portion 17, having a central bore and lateral openings 18. The tube 16 may be substituted for the tube 16 inthe construction illustrated in Fig. 2,-the tapered end 17' cooperating with the orifice 21, to control the amount of gas dischargedthrough said orifice. The regulating sleeve 20 is mounted directly on the tube 16.
In practice, the regulator tube 16 is engaged with the tube 14 of the burner cock, and adjusted to the proper position to discharge the gas into the burner 10. Said tube 16 is then locked in position by means of the nut 19. The sleeve 20 is engaged with the nut 19, and'adju'sted thereon until 'therecess 22approaches the split end of the tube 16. Then by-slight rotating adjustments of the sleeve 20 in one direction, the split end of the tube 16 may be compressed if necessary to reduce the fiow of gas or said sleeve may be rotated in the other direction to leave the tube 16 in its normal condition if the full flow of gas is desired.
From the foregoing, itwill be readily understood that the invention provides an exceedingly simple device, which may be attached to any standard burner cock, and which may be used in connection with any form of gas burner. It will'be particularly noted, that there is sufiicientspace between the burner cock and the end of the burner, to permit insertion of the fingers to engage the milled flange 24, so that a change of adjustment may be readily made without withdrawing the burner cock and the regulater from the burner, and without necessitating disconnection of the burner cock from the manifold. Thus, if there is any serious change in the gas pressure at the supply main, the regulator may be quickly adjusted to compensate for the change in condition. A further advantage lies in the fact that the regulator device herein described is capable of being applied to installations which are already in use, without necessitating any change in the latter.
Having-thus explained the nature of the invention and described an operative manner of constructing and using the same, although without attempting to .set forth all of the forms in which it may be made, er all of the forms of its use, what is claimed 1s: a
