' AIR DRAFT REGULATOR FOR 011. BURNERS Filed Jan. 8, 1948 James E. H/sled INVENTOR.
Patented Sept. 18, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE AIR DRAFT REGULATOR FOR OIL BURNERS James E. Histed, North Hollywood, Calif.
Application January 8, 1948, Serial No. 1,086
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in' oil burners of a type disclosed in my prior U. S. Patent No. 1,954,173, dated April 10, 1934, and more particularly to an air draft regulator for the burner.
An important object of the invention is to provide a cylindrical combustion chamber in which the oil burner is enclosed and constructed to admit air from the interior as well as from the exterior of a furnace in which the burner is mounted to provide an efiective combustion with the fuel from the burner.
Another object of this invention is to provide a controlled damper for regulating the air admitted into the combustion chamber from exteriorly of the furnace.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efiicient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and install in operative position and which is otherwise well adapted to the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view showin the combustion chamber supported in position on the burner;
Figure 2 is a front elevational view thereof; and
Figure 3 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view showing the combustion chamber and burner mounted in a furnace.
Referring now to the drawing in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates generally an oil burner of the type disclosed in my aforesaid Letters Patent and which projects through a cover plate 6 secured to the outer end of a cylindrical combustion chamber 1 which encloses the burner 5. The cover plate is secured to the outer end of the chamber 7 by suitable fastening devices such as set screws or the like 8 and the combustion chamber 7 is supported in the wall 9 of a furnace with the cover plate 6 positioned outwardly thereof. The inner end of the combustion chamber 'l is open and projects inwardly substantially beyond the inner end of the burner 5.
The lower portion of cover plate 6 is provided with a damper l0 which is hinged at its upper edge to the cover plate as shown at I l for upward swinging movement at its lower edge to admit air exteriorly of the furnace into the lower portion of the combustion chamber 1. One edge of the damper is provided with a set screw l2 working in an arcuate slot 13 of an arcuate arm Hi to hold the damper in an adjusted open position.
With proper adjustment a current of air is set up entering the combustion chamber exteriorly of the furnace and which current tends to settle and concentrate in the center of the combustion chamber and a counter current of air entering the furnace from the usual damper opening (not shown) into the inner end of the combustion chamber, the external and internal currents of air meeting in the combustion chamber at the discharge end of the nozzle of the burner to thus produce an effective and emcient combustion of the fuel.
Having described my invention, what is claimed as new is:
An air draft regulator for oil burners comprising a cylindrical combustion chamber for mounting horizontally in a furnace wall for receiving a burner, said chamber being open at its ends, a circular closure on the outer end of the chamber including a hinged, outwardly and upwardly swinging segmental lower portion constituting a damper operable by gravity to closed position in abutting engagement with the chamber, said closure having openings therein accommodating the burner, a peripheral flange on the closure telescopically receiving the chamber and engageable as a stop with the furnace wall, means on the flange for removably securing the closure on the chamber, and means 101'. securing the damper 1n adjusted position, said closure constitutmg means for removably mounting the burner in the combustion chamber.
